Newbie ?'s '92 300SD
I am new to the Mercedes Diesel. I just purchase a 1992 300SD with 135000 miles. Got I great deal but it has some problems. It is lacking power, shifts a little hard and has a vacuum problem with the AC. I drove the car 600 miles home and began basic service(oil change, fuel filters, Etc.) The car ran smooth but had no acceleration and will only 100 MPH. I created a new problem changing the fuel filter and now the car won't start. Need any input.

They are self bleeding, crank and it will start.
W140's are really cool cars, do a search in the archives. Some people love them some hate them. As for low power it could be a few things. First change all the fluids and filters to get a base line. Then if power is still lacking check the turbo boost, and time it. Have you driven a diesel MB before? You have a 150hp engine in a W140 it ain't going to be a rocket ship. They do move right along, top speed is just shy of 120mph.

Thanks for the help.
I have tried to crank it. I then loosen the fuel lines and there is no fuel coming to them while spinnin the motor. The power issue does feel like it is related to turbo boost, like the lack of any. My bud's is slow off the line but moves pretty well from 25mph and on. His is what I was basing mine against. |

Hmmm, if I recall someone had a similar problem recently and mentioned was a seal at the fuel filter that they cautioned about reinstalling.
Sorry, I am not familiar with this engine but maybe someone will chime in with more details. Hope the hint helps.

Crank more it will start! 603's are a royal pita to start after a fuel filter change. Filling the new filter with something like diesel or diesel purger is a good idea. If you spun it on empty, well then you have a lot of cranking to do.
I can't help you on turbo boost, yours is more modern then mine and I suspect set up differently. It may be like a 606 where as the computer controls turbo boost. I recommend buying a FSM and starting from their.

This would be a good place to start. You really need an engine manual for the 603.970. I wouldn't be surprised if Books4cars had one. Your local MB dealer also has the CD's, at really good prices sometimes. For general W140 tips: http://www.baxnet.com/merc/ As always don't forget Ebay.

did you refill the filter... then lots of cranking
SC,
I have a 93, I would guess pretty similar to your car. I just did both my filters a couple of weeks ago. For the large - main filter I wiggled it in place. Then pulled the top of it a bit to the front of the car while keeping it vertical. I filled the filter in that position ( in my case with diesel purge), then tightened it up. The car started in 20-30 seconds of cranking. The first time I did this I think I remember cranking until the battery wore down. From your name, are you in SC? I'm just North of Charlotte. Chuck |

Maybe you did this........
But here is a hint that I learned from a diesel engine (6.9L) that I ran in the past, which did not have a primer pump:
Change the fuel filters after the engine has come up to operating temp. (Saves a lot of wear and tear on batteries and starter.) I only changed the fuel filter once on a cold engine. It had dual batteries and I still had to have two other vehicles on jumper cables to finally get it to start. That was a lesson I only needed to go through once.
