failed insp due to exhaust system leak...$600 to repair?
i took the car in today to get it inspected, and everything passed except for the exhaust system. apparently, there is a small hole in a pipe before the resonator. the mechanic told me that the whole exhaust line had to be replaced...and that it would be $600 for parts alone. (he actually said labor would only be about $85.) he mentioned taking it to an exhaust specialist and having them saw off the part of the pipe with a hole in it and welding in a new one. does anyone know how much this kind of operation will cost? just a rough estimate would be better than nothing. i don't want to drive her all the way over to the other side of town just for someone to tell me it's gonna be $400. also, is it really true that mercedes didn't make their exhaust systems in peices like most car companies do? am i to understand that if i needed i new muffler it would cost me $600?

If it's on the tube, you can just put an exhaust clamp over it.

i'm not sure. i actually didn't even get the car back until tonight, so i haven't had a chance to actually look at it myself. at higher rpms you can tell that there is a hole somewhere. it's louder and more pronounced than the normal diesel clatter.

I believe you have been the subject of a "Man he's got a Mercedes so we can charge More on this job hahahaha!"
Fastlane shows the mufflers at $91 and $101 (center and rear) http://catalog.eautopartscatalog.com/mercedesshop/sophio/part.jsp?partner=mercedesshop&clientid=catalog.mercedesshop&cookieid=1QA01ET551QA01EX1R&baseurl=http://catalog.peachparts.com/&year=1985&make=MB&model=300-DT-001&category=H&showChildren=false If the downpipe has a hole in it, that is a bit expensive but could be patched. Find another muffler shop who is willing to weld in a short section as necessary or even buy a kit of wrap at Pep Boys or somewhere and stuff that on the hole to get you down the road and pass the vehicle inspection. Better yet use an Indy. Don't you have an independent car repair shop/garage where you take the car or are you doing repairs yourself? Many small car shops can do a better job because they use OE or equivalent mufflers, like Ansa mufflers. Be aware that many Muffler shops stock cheap stuff made of thin inferior materials and 5 years form now it will be rotted out.

here is what the inspection paper says:
In the exhaust section, it has "EXHAUST PIPE" circled. adjacent to that, it says "exhaust pipe leaking" -> 595.00 (parts) 85.00 (labor) 680.00 (total). underneath that, it says "clamps" -> 2.50 (parts)

I vote for just welding a patch over the hole, or if it is just a tiny hole plug it with a weld.

hahahahaha...i just noticed that it almost failed inspection because the "hood wouldn't open." written below what i just described, it says "hood won't open" and there was going to be a $42.50 diagnostic charge to figure out what was wrong. whoever wrote this up scibbled out the part about the hood not being able to open, probably not too long after i recieved a phone call this morning asking me where the hood release is.

What about those patch kits? I think ************** sells them. My step-dad JB Welded a couple of holes on the bimmer when it was his and it held for a few years. I suppose that kind of fix is probably not emissions regulations-friendly.

I second that, thought it would cut down on the amount of crud-on-wheels driving around. Germany has ultra strict laws on that, and all you see driving around are nice super-well-kept cars. In michigan the motto is "if it can move...your good to go!"
