SAD - 1969 Merecedes 220 Diesel Abandoned
I was in Pick-N-Pull yesterday, and saw a 1969 Mercedes 220 Diesel Manual in excellent condition. It was white with no dents. The interior was excellent, the palimino seats have no tears, and even the dash has NO cracks. ALL the chrome fittings are shinny. The odometer reads 90K+ miles, and the car looks excellent in everyway. All the wheels with the wheel covers are still there. The lights are there. The engine looks clean, and even the carpets like nice. This car obviously had been garaged and taken care off before. I do not understand why somebody would abandon such a nice car like this. I took the "220 Diesel nameplate " to remember this car. I am sad to see this car will eventually go to the crusher. I did not take any pictures, but it looks like this (note: this is not the car, but it looks just like it).

Wow... that is a sad story. Makes you wonder why they dropped it off at the wrecking yard... Maybe there's more to the story or someone was really tired of it. Either way, very sad...

With numerous components costing more than the car is worth, it happens all the time. A nice one of those is probably worth 1000 -1500. A motor rebuilt properly would cost atleast double that. A trans, slightly more, an injection problem near as much if not more.
During the last decade of its life it was undoubtably owned by someone not wishing to participate in the midiocre living standards of automotive technicians. Easier to support the more luxurious living standards of manufacturing workers and sales people.

Forgive my ignorance, but is it completely impossible to rescue a car from a pick-n-pull? I have no experience with junkyards or wrecking yards and am not familiar with the rules. It just seems to me that there are a lot of whole cars that someone might want to salvage ... probably a lot of people dump off rare classics not knowing what they are.

I went to a junkyard today and found an '85 exactly like my wrecked one, same colors inside an out. That's when my troubles started. I found out, in Oklahoma at least, that when I car is sent to a junkyard the title is destroyed and can't be reinstated. However, there is a loophole for what I want to do. I called about five different places and found out that I could get what was called an "assembled" title. What this means is that if I keep all the records for everything I buy to put on the car, the state of OK will give me a new title. I'm not sure how it works in other states but that's what I'm going to do.

Oh yeah I also wanted to say that this was my first trip to a junkyard and it was sad to see 40 or so Mercedes stripped to the bone. It gave me the chills, like walking through a graveyard. Maybe I'm just too sensitive.

Maybe user addiced will chime in here...his 300D (I believe) was once a ride of the wrecking yard and then someone saved it.
Now he has it...and we are starting to realize why it was there in the first place |

Maybe they just needed to get rid of it fast. Still a shame to see good examples get crushed.

Some one needs to get that car NOW. I saw a whole row of German cars many Mercedes diesels, go to the crusher at the pull a part last week.
It is really too bad.

Y'all would really have a hard time seeing all of the new cars, taken directly from the assembly line, that have taken their government-mandated crash test...
Oh, and it does not matter if they failed, or passed, they are then just so much scrap. |

I have seen a pic of a lot of the old 123's and stuff, still sitting in a warehouse in Germany that were crashed. I would want some of those parts.

Rich300TDMBZ,
Where is this Pick-N-Pull? Sounds like a lot of nice stuff that could be used in my old 220D!

Save It!!!
I'm here Brandon to preach my story!!!!!
My first 2 Mercedes (The ones I have now ) Were both from the Junk Yard. My first 115 240D is still in the garage but finally have found a crank for it. The interior is absolutely crap but I still love the car. It needs glowplugs, Crankshaft, Drivers Seat and a few other things here and there but other than that I still think it is an amazing car. My 115 300D Is a piece of Work. Everything out of is jacked up on this car. Yet the body looks great (one small dent) and the interior is almost perfect. Head work, new tranny, WP, Fuel lines......etc. Both of these cars were junkyard Cars. The 240 was going to the blocks that day. Here in Oregon it is pretty easy to get an "assembled title" as you called it. Or so I've heard. If I saw that and I was you I would have boughten it. But that is my addiction I guess. I barely have more than enough to pay the rent in my account every month but I still am always looking for Older Mercedes. And never one that runs mind you. Even though I knew barely anything (thanks to Brandon I can survive now) I still am interested. I have no place to store them either but I just don't care. I go great lenghts to save these cars. It really is an addiction. I should look up the definition but I'm sure I fit it to a T. Hell I've never even owned one that ran but I love them to death. When I go the junkyard it just breaks my heart. I almost can't handle it. Sometimes it has to be more than about the monetary value of these cars. Their value and provided enjoyment is more than the money that goes into them. Time well spent, good memories, and a classic beauty. And because of their "low monetary value" there should be no need to sell them". No need to sell one car to get another story. Well hopefully that changes some of your minds out there. As for me I'm going to try and work on my addiction. But till then I'm going to keep on learning, keep on working, and probably keep on saving. Less of this And more of this
