Water Pump 115

Ok,

Something is Fishy here. My Water Pump went out on my 76 300D. I looked at the manual and it shows the same water pump as my 74 240D. The one I ordered is correct though so it must be standard, but it is way different than my 240D. I don't understand why the Brain Gears Manual shows me other wise. I also wonder why the balancer doesn't have a way to get through to the bolt. In the pictures of others there is a space in the balancer to get to it through. There is a U shape cut out. My balancer has no holes whatso ever and the only way I can see to get to it is to take it off. Why would the Germans do such a stupid thing, They never really have before. There must be something I'm not seeing.

I would appreciate any help. I absolutely have to have the car running by this Sunday for the Portland GTG. This will be its first real run more than 15 miles.

Thank you in advance. I will not be able to reply until Saturday when I get back from a trip.

Don't underestimate the shortsightedness of German engineers. On early 123 300d's with the right side AC compressor, the bracket blocks access to the water pump. I ground away part of the bracket with a dremel tool and diamond bit rather than remove the AC. Probably not a good idea on the balancer.

there may be a different situation on one of the "bolts". is there one that is a stud and nut?

You have to give them credit though, that probably wasn't a SUPER common feature in Germany?

They sorta stuck frakenstein on there the best they could...its pretty obvious though that the car was not designed for that beast And yes I agree that it gets in the way of a LOT.

I will be taking a look today. It is 7:30am and I just got back from a 1500 mile trip to Cali in 25 hours and need some sleep. The nap I took on top of mt Shasta wasnt enough....Man is it cold up there. From looking at it though it appears to be an allen. If it was just a nut I could get it off and get in there I think. But it is either completely rounded off or an Allen. I'm going to go grab some much needed shut eye.

another posibility

is if the hole in the pump on that bolt is a slot instead of a hole.

there must be a way to get it off with out pulling the hb.

Well it was me....not the Germans :)

Well Dummy Me,

Well replaced the water pump. Dummy me. I finally found what was up with that bolt. I was looking at the wrong one. The one I wanted was about an inch above that hiding in a bunch of dirt and oil. I didn't need to take the allen off after all.

So after getting it all back together I noticed a small drip leak out of the air release tube on the top of the block. I tightened it and it still leaked. I gave it one last mall tug and it broke off and water sprayed out. F^%$ I said to myself. But luckily I had an extra in my 240D sitting in my garage and since these bolts have the small hole to release air I was able to get a screw driver on it and pound it around with a hammer and then unthreaded it. Put the new one in and started up. The only problem now is small oil leak out of the oil chain tensioner and ( I JUST BROKE MY HEADLIGHTS)

I was taking my wife on a cruise for the first time to the University near by and I was trying to get my fog lights to turn on. They didn't so I played with the knob a bit more and then the lights in the dash crapped out. I did it one more time and the headlights went out. So I had to go home on the back streets in the dark. I'll see what it is up with those in the morning.

it

always invites trouble playing around with things in the dark with your wife in the car!

good luck.

glad you got the water pump out.

usually when you suspect that the german engineers are dunderheads it is because you havent seen t he beauty in their design.

now the ac bracket and the alternator adjuster on the 115s are both abortions. but the rest of the 115 is pretty sweet!

My thoughts Exactly.

I figured there was absolutely no way that they would make me take of the hb just to get the wp off.

Secondly we took off the Frankenstein as it was always in the way and doesn't work right now anyway.

Thirdly, The car is pretty sweet. I'm going to go give it a wash and head to the GTG.
