Seat belt replacement

Has anyone replaced their seat belts yet? I am about to order a front set for my coupe.

http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Product/tf-Browse/s-10101/Pr-p_Product.CATENTRY_ID:2006841/showCustom-0/p-2006841/N-111+10201+600003269/c-10101

Or does anyone know of a place to find stock replacement for a reasonable price?

There are several people parting out vehicles here, I'd go that route. Could end up being a pretty cheap way out. Whatever you do don't open the reels up.

Here's the EPC for front seat belts.

I don't understand- what's the difference? Are seatbelts generally dirty?
If you want new OEM get ready to pay big money.
Still don't understand what's wrong with a used belt, but whatever.

On W123s, most used belts have been through 21-30 years of constant use, and the wear if excessive encountered on them can weaken their strength. I've seen seat belts starting to wear, holes starting to come through and such. A hole filled belt isn't going to do much good in an accident.

This is a safety component where I'd rather have new OEM rather than used if the need to replace them ever arises.

i have replaced them with used before

and it is surprising that from one year to another they may be different. so you may need to change the part that bolts to the floor too, the latch.
and it is not hard. fifteen minutes or so.

i feel comfortable using the old belts as long as they arent frayed.

probably still better than the ones from jc whitney or on a new chebby.

What year did the latch change, 83 or 84?

The seat belts on '80, '82, and '83 all seem to be the same, but the ones on the '85 are different at the latch. Also the '85 parts car, that I have, was equipped with the detonators on the reel in the b-pillar. Have been told these are dangerous to handle?!? Not sure which group the 84's would match, but likely the '85.

the belt came from an 82 or 83 and

went into an 83 or 82. they looked pretty much the same but were subtley different and you had to take the belt and latch together. all mount points were the same. it wasnt a prblm but i am giving a heads up so someone wont be tempted to get the belt alone at the yard and leave behind the latch and be disappointed when it doesnt match up.

I've never seen a seatbelt in such dire straits. Obviously it would be common sense to not replace with a damaged part that fits your description. As if anyone would be dumb enough to replace a seatbelt with such a frayed, hole-filled unit! Most used ones are still pretty good however. New seatbelt reels, at least for the '85, approach $400 per side. That's what I priced them at a couple years back when I needed one.

The old seatbelt just feels dirty.
Also, the driver's side is incomplete, and the passenger side push button catch is just plain wrong for the car. I believe it is for a "late style" belt.

So, it's replace with something new and clean, or replace with something old and questionable.

I've found others cheaper, but this style from JC Whitney has the push button similar to original.

BTW, my 1983 still has the "early style".

well for dirt

you can clean them nicely with 'tough stuff'. and if they are notchy you can clean and lube them. now when the plastic parts start breaking ther isn't much you can do with that. but i still have quite a few around from parted cars. i would never buy new ones for $400 or cheap ones from jc whitney.

Would you want to sell a set, and if so for how much?
