Bought my first mercedes yesterday 1984 300d, have questions please

Hi, I just bought my first mercedes ever, yesterday and now have some questions. This is also my first experience with a diesel engine.
  • The engine sounds loud, is this normal for this model year
  • acceleration seems slow in first gear, is this normal
  • where is the best place for replacement parts, all of the online searches that I have googled seem to bring up the same parts dealers with different names, is there a real place to go?
  • Any other tips that you may be able to offer?

Thank you so much!

your slow acceleration might be because you need to adjust your alda.. clean the banjo bolts.. change the fuel filters too..

Okay, now I understand what banjo bolts are, yea! Okay, now, the engine does not purr like a kitten, as I expected from a diesel, buy it is a little louder than a gas engine. Is this normal?

It will definetly run louder than a gas engine. But it should run smooth, with no loud pings, ticks, knocking, and any irregular sounds should be looked into as well.

Yes! Welcome to the world of cars that run like hell, but run like hell forever!

Diesels (at least the older ones) are much slower, louder, and smellier than their gasoline engined counterparts. I will agree with the others, start off with general maintenance. Change the oil, put on two new fuel filters, and get the valves adjusted.

The engine in your car requires a valve adjustment every 15,000 miles (if I recall correctly). The car will run more noisy and rough when not in adjustment, so this is a good place to start. This is a service that is not too difficult to do if you have some mechanical skill, but it does require special wrenches. Any European car place will do it as well for not too much change.

As for parts, just click on "Buy Parts" on the top of this page. This site is comparable in price to most vendors, plus they offer you this niffty chat-site.

Happy motoring!

Klaus

I don't know but from the sounds of your description I'm sure you car is just fine. These things are Way noisier than a gas...most of them....Kevin your car is quiet.

It may be slow in first gear becasue it is not really first. If you drop it into low or slope you will get some better get up and go. But D it takes a bit to get going.

As for parts Phil is helpful and is really close to most other parts stores. ******** is another good one to check out.

As for your valve adjustment it is easy and you don't need speacial wrenches. You just need two 14mm's & some feeler gauges.

Good luck and welcome to the world of Mercedes. Notice my name....they are right...it is addicting.

Phil at Fastlane was berry, berry good to me on parts, nice guy too. Free shipping on 100 bucks, so get a good list going.

Get vacuum hose, vacuum connectors, and some more vacuum hose...I'm beginning to think you can fix everything on these cars with vacuum hose...including your tranny.

I've never bought from Phil, he's too expensive. If the forum ever needs cash, I'll pay $$ straight to their ISP bills first.

I use Rusty, www.***************

He's cheaper by a fair amount and ships free for orders over $75 instead of $100.

Plus, I like his personality. Call him with an explanation of what ails your car, and chances are he knows what needs fixing, what parts are needed, and what it will cost ya......

And he's fast....

Do you have a really thick foam pad attached to the bottom of your hood? This is a sound deadening pad. On my 85 it is there and in good condition but has become fragile with age. I find that my engine is loud with the hood up, loud if you are behind it, loud at the drive-through, but cuising down the road it is not bad at all and I find myself speeding more often then not. I just got mine and since I plan on keeping it for a long time I will pull up the floor mats this summer and put Dynamat in the footwells.

Now that's a great thought, a sound deadining pad. I will have to look under the hood for that. Is that an expensive part too replace?

Also, seems I have a small leak of some sort that I just noticed, i guess this is common. What would be the most common source of leaks, and are they an easy fix?

Thank you all so much again

The noisiest part on the diesel is the air cleaner assembly
when it breaks it's rubber mounts and bounces all around the intake.
