Try repeatedly glowing the plugs if they just glow a few seconds. Yes, there's an electrical relay involved thats attached to the LF wheelwell. But firing up the engine from stone cold start should become familiar ritual that you enjoy.

Larry, what you're saying about 240D's reminds me why so many of them are available at/less than $1200..... LOL, the owners feel that the cars owe them NOTHING in return for amazing reliability and use value that the cars have provided.

Larry, and then there's the Old World Finbody Diesels from the 1960's...... In immaculate perfect condition as collectibles their value today approximately equals their brand new sticker price in the 1960's - about $2,300 (when volkswagen beetles went for $1200 brand new off the showroom floor).

hey dog,

i think you are a little low on your price estimate.

my 62 190c sold new i believe for $4,000.

in 63 you could buy a new mustang with a six and three speed for 2399. and in 66 you could buy a new vw beetle for 1,300.

and in 65 you could buy a new 289 cobra for 6999. and a corvette for about 4999 or so.

so you would have to get back in the fifties i think for a benz to be in the 2300 range. prob 49 or 50, my guess.

on the glow plugs

i dont think the pencil type are all that superior. but the ones i did were the manual type. the ones with the relay might be better.

in any case if the loop type are working correctly there is no reason they shouldnt work for you just fine.

on the sunroof you may be able to get it to seal satisfactorily by just getting onto the concealed frame of the roof panel and give it a push forward or backward to get it in the right position.

i bet if it is whistling it isnt all the way shut.

This is a '78 300D - there is no relay on the left fender wall- the relay is under the dash to the left of the sterring wheel.

I tried to check the glow plugs today, following the procedure from the online manual and I noticed that as I was checking the voltage from plug to plug and TRYING to check the voltage drop from plug to plug, that after about 10-15 seconds the voltage went from approx. 12 volts to 0. Is the relay shutting down power after so long to the plugs? How long should there be power to the plugs with the key on?

I'm getting a little confused trying to TS this system (again, my first venture into diesels and glow plugs and I've already learned a lot).

thanks, ryan
