Have a great day,
I had the misfortune of having to read FMVSS 108 (the federal lighting standard) today, and I think you're right. Luckily, I only skimmed the approximately 40 pages of headlight stuff and only needed the required light locations and colors at the end of the standard. That's right, 40 pages of descriptions, tests, descriptions of test apparatus, etc to tell you how a headlight should be made. While 108 is a revision of the previous law, there's obviously a lot of the old text left in. I'm certain some light company persuaded Congress to write the standard to their product.

I'll see if I can find the European standard for comparison at work tomorrow.

Just pulled one out of a 7 in. Hella it says 12V 4W. WorldPac sells a 2W. Its a bayonet bulb available from most electrical supply places, used in old test equipment, steroes from the 50's etc. The Euro headlights in my 124 uses wedge base bulbs though.

Real eurolamps for the w126 body make the coolest designs on walls and such when they are the only thing that is on

Looks like a huge angry face. I need to take some pics of the SD since it is washed and such The citylights look cool!!!

BTW I roll stock 55/60's I had 55w/100's and loved them but they low beams took a beating. I was thinking of going with xenon bulbs (not the stupid blue ones or anything...I want the real 12v xenon bulbs) becuase I was doing some research and found that running a halogen bulb at a voltage under its recommended value or fluctuating the voltage can cause them to prematurely fail. Has something to do with the temperature not being high enough and causes the halogen gas to not do its thing...etc. etc.

And yes...euro is the only way to fly

I have euros on my bug...and my 300SD. The 240D has stock headlamps becuase I don't want to spend money on the car that I mostly only drive during the day and am soon to sell

H4 actually ARE DOT approved, I had a crumpled Ford Focus in my shop the other day and was amazed to see that it was equipped with H4's.

I have Bosch 5.75" in my SD with Silverstars, WOW a huge difference. I do need to aim them a little higher however. I also upgraded the wiring with a few custom modifications. like Quad Lowbeam.. I have only one pair so far till I have the spare cash for the second pair. I'll post some pics when I get a camera...

As long as you are the only one on the road with them! They half blind the oncoming driver.

My bad...I just assumed that "for off road use only" and "not legal for street use" that I saw on the H4 lamp packages around here implied that. Thanks for correcting me.

Autozone sells them.

Technically I believe that the H4s are not DOT approved, there is a 9xxx number assigned to the US version, which from my comparison of the two, is identical.

Go figure.

If they don't say DOT on them, they're not approved.
But I sure like mine!

maybe that's 9003. I couldn't tell the difference between that and the H4 holding them side by side.

You can buy Sylvania Silverstar H4s and there are no such disclaimers stating that they are for offroad use only. In the application guide they list many auto manufacturers...but then maybe Canada's DOT reg.s are a bit different.

Hmm, interesting thread. I just put a pair of KATMACs on my SD primarily for the looks, and with slight hope of overall better lighting than the DOTs. I knew that I could do the H4 DOT replacement square Hellas, but I figured I'd try the euro look first.

The KATMACs came with some POS blue tint H4s that I think were dimmer than the old Wagner DOTs. I took a chance at Autozone and got the Silverstars for $40. Big difference. And FWIW the package does say, "For Motorcycle or Off-Road use."

Compared to my prior experience with Hellas, these Taiwanese knock offs, are not nearly as superior in lens, or reflector design.

But they look great in the daylight!
