Don't think it's a diesel. Should be 300d. I'm not an expert on these cars, but I also think 1954 is too early for it to be a "d" model.

Designated "d" on account of it being 4th version of the 300 series after the 300c and 300b, shared the same 3 litre 6 cyl engine with the 300SL Gullwing...... deffinitely not a diesel.

Extra non-stock fuel pump in the trunk with some spark plugs...not a good sign

well

that engine was the basis for the gullwing's engine. in the gullwing it was laid over, i dont know, maybe 30 degrees. and had an aluminum head (not sure what the big car has). also the gullwing had mechanical fuel injection and would go about 150 top end. the big 300d would go about 100 i think.

later 300s had mechanical injection too, maybe around 59 or 60. and they made that model til at least 62. pretty cool cars. very expensive to restore the right way.

that car doesnt look terrible, but obviously to be show quality it needs a lot. but to me it would be fun just to piddle around with and use without restoring. i would definately paint the fenders though. they look silly.
