tranny temp gauge

Hi,
Searched and can't seem to find it. I am installing a tranny temp gauge in my 73 International with the transplanted 617 motor and tranny and was wondering where I should mount the probe? Any suggestions?
On my ford there was a test port on the side but not sure about this tranny. The reason for the gauge is I do snowplowing with this truck and I like to monitor everything. Link to pics is below. Thanks Mike

Hey that is a really nice truck! It looks like the truck swallowed the engine with no problem.

I would put the sensor in the pan, since that is the temp the tranny will see when the pumps picks up the oil. The Dodges put the temp sensor in the tranny line to the cooler. That would take some fabrication though.

Does the MB engine pull the truck ok, that thing looks heavy.

Pulls it just fine. When I need it, the propane kicks in and off we go. That truck with the plow weighs 6700lbs and gets over 20mpg on the highway. The gears are 3.73 and the tires are 33's. Runs even better on veg oil. I feel that the 617 diesel is the best motor ever made. I currently own 4 of them.
83 TD wagon
83 300D sedan
82 300sd
and of course this truck which has a motor from a 83 sd

I was thinking the pan too. The one side is deeper than the other so I should have room there. Thanks Mike

Propane? Injection?

Do you have a homemade system or is it a bullydog system?

westkill 02-15-2006 07:33 PM

Its a home made system. I have it so 1 switch arms the system and using a Hobbs pressure switch in the intake, the fuel lock opens at 5 lbs boost. You can set it to anything you like. I also have a manual overide that I can hit and inject gas at any time regardless of boost psi. The propane really helps on those long uphill runs.. Heres some photos Mike

Landrover puts the sender for a trans over heat light in the cooler line near the radiator. I don't know if it's on the inlet side or the outlet side

Propane injection, huh. I've heard of this but how many of you have actually added this type of system to your MB?

Wasuchi 02-16-2006 12:44 PM

If you can mount it in the cooler line right where it comes out of the trans that should be good, just put a "T" in there and put the sensor in the T. I was told that was the best place on my big truck with an Allison in it because it comes right out of the torque converter and goes to the cooler, you'll see the highest temps there.

I would perhaps look at putting a larger transmission cooler on this rig if you do a lot of plowing and such with it.

I realize that the stock cooler that runs through the radiator probably works okay on a regular car you are pushing around a LOT of mobile there and really using the torque converter. (espically when you throw more power through the engine with the propane)

Maybe time to upgrade the cooler and put an inline temp sender in there for good measure? Would be pretty easy :)

BTW the 722.3 series trannies had a port on the transmission for an overload protection thing for the V-8 G-wagon...the boss is there in the non-g-wagons so that might give you somewhere to hook up.

Thanks for all the replys and compliments. Anyone know which is the supply line to the tranny cooler?. Is it the line on the drivers or passenger side of the tranny?. Thanks Mike

That is definitely one of the coolest trucks I have ever seen. Mercedes turbo diesel engine, Propane injection, veg oil, damn, thats nice.
