1983 240 D Manual Transmission Oil

I have a 1983 240D with a manual transmission with 78000 miles on it and would like to change the trnasmission oil. Several sources list ATF as the lubrcant and Type A ATF (hard to find) specifically. Does the current Mercedes ATF meet the specs? Is there a synthetic such as Royal Purple that can be used?

Thanks fo the help,

James

Any Dexron fluid will work...of course synthetic is better.

I bought some Redline MTL that has been mentioned here, but I haven't put it in yet.

I actually called Redline and they recommended their MTL for my 82 240d manual trans. It seemed to shift easier after I started using it. A quart costs $7.95 at Summit Racing but I felt the benefits outweighed the price (ie. would probably never need changed again).

I am taking Larry Bible's advice and will use Moble 1 10-30. He has reported a lot of sucess with this on many cars and miles. And compared with the other synthetics talked about here, the price is right...

I was actually doing this job today. My only problem is after removing about 100 screws to remove the bottom pannels, I have discovered that my socket is too long for the area provided to remove the fill hole bolt. I had read while doing a search here for info on this job that the space was tight, but jeeze... Now I have to search for someone to cut an Allen wrench for me

i called the mercedes dealership by my house. the mechanic laughed when i told him what car i had. he kept refering to it as "that old girl". he said the 123W body style can run off anything, he told me to use mobile synthetic ATF in the winter, and some kinda motor oil in the summer, i think 10 W 40? if im not mistaken
