A bad injector won't prevent it from starting.

First thing to check is to see if you have working glow plugs.

Second thing is to make sure you have primed the fuel system with the hand pump........many, many times.

Third is to crank the engine with the fuel lines cracked at the injectors to ensure that you are getting fuel from the IP.

The chance of the IP going bad is very unlikely.

No...the fuel returns to the tank, your just getting all the air out. ( Apart from what leaks out of the primer pump, that is !)

is there any way to flush out the fuel tank to take all the small pieces of grim? And when putting in new filter what are some pointers one needs to know to ensure better quality?

Take the tank off and pressure wash it. No way to do that with it in the car.

There is a screen "strainer" in the tank right above where the supply line leaves the tank on the passenger side. Takes a large socket, cant remember just what size,

When changing the secondery (big one) fuel filter, fill it with CLEAN fuel (or Molly lube) before installing, saves lots of primer pumping.
