Rear End Noise - PeachParts Mercedes-Benz Forum

Hi,
I've got an 1984 300D that's making some rear end noise. The wonderful da-da-da-da-da sound that gets faster when the car is moving faster. I'm fairly sure it's coming from the rear end, though not which side. It is sometimes loud and sometimes I cannot hear it, but it seems to be getting slowly worse.

I suspect it's either:

1. Tire Noise
2. Wheel Bearing
3. CV Joint\Axle

How can I troubleshoot this problem to determine what to replace? And is it OK to drive like this?

does it make this sound when turning? if so then its one of the axels.. i get a clicking sound when i turn and its my right cv axel or w/e it is... ( i have 2 different types of axel, the old style on the left and the new on the right.. dumb ass previous owners) also check your brake pads, if you have the ATE a clip is supposed to be held in by two pins over the top of it... if the clip just falls out or easily comes out then their is your problem

Does it happen regardless of wether you are accelerating or coasting?

more info would help such as a more detailed description of when you hear the noise.

but i am betting on cv joints.

Thanks for responding. The noise does not depend on whether I'm steering or how fast I'm going. Revs up faster with more speed, until it is overpowered by the engine noise, but back down at low speeds (decelerating or accelerating) I hear it again.

The noise will last throughout a trip, though some trips it is very quiet and some trips it is loud. Right away on the first backup out of my garage I will hear it (or not), and it will be the same for the whole trip.

I also suspect the CV joints in the axles. How can I test them? And what is a center bearing?

put the car where it will be stable in neutral like level ground. put the car in neutral and reach up under the back and grab the half shaft. wiggle. if it moves that is not good. it should be very solid with no movement at all.
