Do you think insurance companies are classifying my 300D as a sports car?
Hello, I'd like to introduce myself first, I am new to cars in general, but I have a good mechanical background and I've been doing a lot of research on MBs. My biggest problem right now is finding a cheap insurance company. I got a quote of $1400 for 6 months from Geico! I'm a new driver, yes, and I've never had my own insurance- I had my "learner's permit" for 2 years then ran out of time to renew it before I had to move out of state. I'm going to get a fresh and new license here in TX. But I'm trying to figure out why its so expensive. The car is an 84(I think) 300D Turbo Diesel, and I'm paying $900 for it next week.
So, what insurance companies do you all reccomend? Thanks! Another question: How exactly do I adjust my ALDA? I tried searching, but all I found was people asking about how to adjust it, and people telling them to search. Apparently there is an adjustment screw somewhere that I need to turn. Where is it and how do I get to it? When I've got it, what do I do to it? Thanks again! Last edited by phasmatisnox; 02-13-2006 at 02:57 AM. |

What kind of insurance are you putting on it? Just the bare minimum required or additional coverage with collision? New drivers always get slammed with insurance payments, especially if you live in a high accident area. Try pricing it in other states and see if you get a lower quote for comparison sake.
I don't know for sure, but I really don't think that it is being classified as a sports car.

Living at home and driving a car registered in my name (95 Altima), my 20 yr old son pays about $1200/yr with Geico in Fairfax, Virginia. If he owned the car, the rates would likely double. So if you want to bernefit from your parents policy, they must own the car. regards, Mark |

Thats not entirely true. The title must at least have their name on it. You can title the car with a parents name and your name (joint ownership) and then your parents can insure it on their policy.

Your parents can insure you if they want to accept the risk of having a young driver on their policy. The risk is the greater statistical chance of a young driver having an accident and that causing their carrier to cancel coverage. But, we here in MB world know that smart young drivers, that is smart enough to drive a 300D, are probably more responsible than the average.
BTW, if you are wondering how the 300D is rated, just compare it to a newer car with a V8 and you'll see. The carrier is probably rating the 84 300D at about the lowest possible rate for the area and your age. Just remember, not all insurance carriers are the same. The rates can vary greatly. If you are a student, you might qualify for a good student discount if you get decent grades.

They may have just not wanted to fool with you. I asked about insurance through Progressive several years ago for a '95 S500 that I was considering purchasing. It would have been full coverage with a $500 deductible. The rep said, without even several seconds hesitation,"that will be $5,000 every six months." I am not making this up.

My girlfriend moved to the US from Scotland when she was in her 30s and needed to get a license and insurance etc. No company would write coverage for her at the standard rate because she hadn't been "insured" before. Same thing with new drivers, or young drivers.
I was an auto insurance underwriter for a time and have some experience. As with many things in this world. Shop around is the best advice I can give.

Insurance, I registered my 79 450SLC as an antique, with no collision. $400 a year insurance. There are some restrictions, but I have a reciept from my mechanic that is not dated, in case I ever get stopped, In Mass, you can only use an antique to go back and forth to shows or the shop and you can drive it on Sunday. But I practically use it daily, at least for a short drive here and there, and have been passed or I have passed many local and state police cars and never got stopped, It has a valid inspection sticker, a valid license plate sticker, so my thinking is even if the the particular officer knows the rules, I haven't been stopped as everything is legal. One officer when I pulled up to a convenience store started walking over to the car, and I said to my myself, I am secured now. All he did was admire the car and asked the yyear and told me what a beautiful automobile and that was that. disclaimer: do this at your own risks, as each state and each police deparment are different and the rules for Antique's are different in each state. I take no responsiblity for any tickets or any breach of the law which might occur if you do it. Also Underwood insurance group has excellent rates for old cars, antique etc. They quoted me $650, but I has a restriction of less then 10K miles a year, which in my case is not a problem. You can find them with a google search.

$2,800 a year is about right. Let me guess you are between the age of 16-21? I have been coughing up $2,400 a year since I was 17 and I don't even have collison! They rape young drivers because we cause a lot of accidents. Unless you try something slick you will be paying.
I just got a quote from Progressive for my own policy and it was about $4,200 a year without collison. Theft, window breakage, and I think about $300k medical. It depends where you live to, If you live in a built up area I think it costs more. But after 21 it drops off! Their is an adjustment screw on top of the alda, it is under a cover. Unscrew it and play with it until you get good power off the line without to much smoke.

I'm sure the Turbo isn't helping, even if it's a diesel.
