Who makes the tranny for a '95 E300D?
 

A friend of mine (an ex-300E owner) said the tranny in my car is a GM. Truth or fiction?

Fiction.

The transmission used in the 95 E300D is a Mercedes-Benz model 722.435 transmission.

Unless of course somebody retrofitted a GM transmission into your specific car I'd say he is wrong.

GM isn't capable enough to make a lug for the wheel of a MERCEDES! It would be like saying that "Homie da clown" made the atomic bomb! LMFAO!!

GM auto trannies are copied and revised as needed by MB, but they're still MB. BMW uses GM transmissions however.
FIY, GM transmissions are tough and well-designed. The Turbo Hydra-Matics are beefy. Just because GM turned its back on the American car-buying public and sold us all crap for 30 years doesn't mean they don't know how to do right.

In the past Mercedes has used GM parts in some production cars. The GM R-4 and A-6 compressors were used for some A/C systems in the 70's and 80's. I also believe the first Mercedes cruise control systems (from the early 70's) were supplied by Ford.

No MB uses good trans. Unlike the ZF junk that is sold by BMW and Jag.:pukeface:

Say what you want about MB but they made and still do make some very tough trans. Just as good as anything GM has put out.

Rolls Royce used GM trans for awhile actually.:D

My uncle's cavalier is 10 years old, has 112,000 on it, and has never had a tranny issue whatsoever, has never done a fluid change to it (its a sealed for life 3 speed automatic) and it still is appearantly working perfectly. I'd agree GM makes good trannys (their 4cyl and 8cyl engines seem tough too) but the rest of the car is generally crap. :D Then there's that safety in an accident issue.... :rolleyes:

my cousins cavalier suffered cooling system failure at 80k and 3 years old-- to the point that the engine had to be taken out and rebuilt.

while it was financed, now.

i wouldnt call that tough.

Did your cousin maintain the vehicle per manufacturer's recommendations? 50/50 chance these days that it's the owner's fault. But nobody likes to talk about that.
Cavaliers are crap, but they will last as long as you keep up the maintenance. There are a lot of people out there that think cars don't require upkeep and then lament when theirs lets them down. Pretty sad really.

I wish MB's had GM trannies. They'd a lot be less expensive to rebuild.:P
In all the GM's I've had, none of the trannies have had any problems.
IMO, I think both D-C and GM have turned their backs on the American car-buying public:P

No they havn't thats who buys their cars and keeps them in business. The entire point of DC and GM is to sell cars and make money doing it.

Ac compressor GM
 

Gm made the ac compressors in the early 1980s. I needed a new one on my 300 SD and the one I had for my Cadillac bolted right up. Only had to change the clutch.

No to take this too far off topic, but...I have a '94 Cavalier with 205k on it which my daughter now uses. It has the original three speed, tho' the lock up feature long ago stopped working. It's had one alternator, one water pump and a head gasket. Not too shabby.
