Conclusion European cars have good brakes!
I would believe that knowing that the disc brakes on our expedition are smaller then the ones on my 300SD Im surprised we actually get the beast to stop with disc brakes smaller then a music cd

I noticed this issue on our minivan, it has disc rotor surface area about 1/2 the size of the W126. Thats just scary, and it has rear drum brakes! I've had to stop hard in the van before, and it fades fast, not reassuring at all. My powerdiscs on my '82 actually increase their bite in the process of braking hard, its pretty awesome.

My uncle's cavalier has better brakes than our van, oh well. That van is despised by us enough as it is, I should leave it alone.

Had I not been able to stop in time I'd have probably veered left and gone up on the grassy slope to the side of the road, and been un-damaged....but still, it was pretty intense.

I've noticed this too on our van (1990) but only the fading.

In the mornings especially if you go out and it hasn't been driven, the first few touches on the brakes will put you right over the wheel. As long as you don't get them hot they work GREAT but if you do, they fade. I ate a few sets of pads in the months I drove our van before I was turned onto german cars

And yes...rear drums (but they work!). Hell a properly set round of old VW brakes will do a pretty fine job (course the car is much lighter!)

After driving MB's for awhile and getting back into a mortal car I am usually surprised by the crummy brakes.

I don't want to get rear ended, because if I do the insurance company will be like "your car is old so harass us for 12 months and we will pay half"

i went and got some quotes today from 3 different places. first was $1450, 2nd was $1700 and the 3rd one was $1890.

some of the metal frame behind the bumper was banged up, and it will have to be pulled out. if i just put my own bumper on and light on there it will not match out and be alligned wrong.
