240D intake/ehxaust manafold gasket replacement

My '77 240D blew out #4 ehxaust manafold gaskt. I know what I need to do to replace it BUT.... The replacement gasket is METAL on one side and just gasket material on the other. Which side goes toward the head??? Thanks, Chris

It should be metal on both sides.

One side looks like that but the otherside of the gasket is metal covered. I was going to GUESS that the all metal side went against the ehxaust manafold.

I had some Fel Pro exhaust gaskets that were made the same way. At first I couldn't figure out how they should be positioned.. But then I saw on the metal side was stamped "manifold side".

Question

well, if your paying attention, look at the old gasket, if it's the same "elring" brand that Fastlane sells, then the old gasket will tell you what side the gasket faces. I'm going to do one tomorrow on my 617, and I was actually wondering the same thing....oh, BTW What torque, in Ft Lbs are the manifold bolts tightened to?

It's not a symmetrical gasket in either axis, so you can't install it backward. If you flip it over, it won't install and if you rotate it 180 degrees, it won't install.

Problem solved.

I did the gasket today and the old one though barely detectable had the metal towards the manafold. Also, It looked like it wouldn't go any other way.
WHAT A b!+ch the '77 is because you have to take that monsterous A/C compressor bracket off to get the manafold off!!!. This includes taking off the cooling fan and shroud. The later 240's with the Harrison compressor would be a pece of cake.

THANKS guys for the tips on the gasket. Chris

nothing is ever easy

I'm getting ready go through the same thing with my '78 300CD as I go to replaced a cracked exhaust manifold. The FSM doesn't say so, but are you supposed to apply any sort of sealant to this gasket? Or does it just get torqued down into place with no worry of leakage?

Motorhead, I feel your pain. I have that same damned huge compressor that is mounted via one of the manifold bolts. Ugh!

Definitely no sealant on the gasket. It wouldn't survive more than five minutes............

No sealant and yes you too get the pleasure of pulling the whole A/C bracket off.
I didn't unhooh anything on the compressor, just slid the whole assembly toward the right wheel well to get access.
