83 300D Tranny Problems HELP

i took the car for a trip over the weekend. friday drove from baltimore to norfolk,va along 95 and 64. highway sppeds to whole way, except for traffic around DC. ran great.
headed home yesterday. came across country roads most of the way.
filled up at a country station three hours into trip.
shortly after fillup, noticed decrease in power. had to mash on accelerator more and more to keep up speed. thought it was bad fuel.
finally at stop light couldnt accelerate. engine reved fine but no forward motion.
got into parking lot of strip mall and shut off engine. allowed to cool for ~1.5 hrs. started back up and was able to limp up the road a mile or so before it gave out again.
wife came and picked me up.
drove back today with dolly and dragged it home.
any thoughts on what it might be.
thanks for any help...

Are you SURE its not just bad fuel/clogged filters? At first, your description sounds like a loss of power rather than transmission slip.

Did you loose reverse as well as forward gears? My first thoughts would be the dreaded B2 piston failure if you've still got reverse. Did ou check the fluid level?

the engine seemed to run fine. reverse is out.
neede to push it up onto the dolly and push it off the dolly to unload.
ran the motor for a few minutes and checked the level of AT fluid. seemed low, but not sure it was at running temp. will let it run for a while this evening and re check. thanks for your help...

last night i started the car and allowed it to run for 30 minutes or so.
checked the at fluid. just touching the tip of stick.
also, put it into gear and drove around the block. seemed to do ok.
wondering again if it is not bad fuel?
if it is fuel, there is about .75 tank left. what would be the best way to burn through this?
thanks for help.

Sounds a lot like you ran out of trans fluid.
