Their are very few 4cy engines that sound agressive. I can't think of one actually, I6 yes, V8 yes, V10 and V12 yes but no 4 bangers. I hate ricers with those stupid fart cans.

haha oh you said it now....

Ever heard a built Type 2 VW engine? The one in our dune buggy pops and cracks at idle and sounds just a smidge agressive

Its carburated...and makes a little power

Drove an MG with a Beetle engine. I wasn't very impressed with the sound or power for that matter. Also red lined a 1.8T, yawn not any more exciting then my Camry.

Maybe the built ones sound better, any sound bites?

Listen to that M119 scream! Now that is what I call music!

As far as 4 bangers go this sounds pretty nice, doesnt sound too ricy to me.

But I agree Hattie, nothing compared to a 6 or 8.

Heh SO FAR from a built VW sound...hehe

The VW engines like sub 6k rpms...very odd for a 4 banger...its all in the opposing

What about WRX turbo motors? The new ones are pretty agressive...

Still though...I agree that I like the sound of a big v-8 loping.

I am looking at picking up a project car 450SEL 6.9

Our caravan's muffler is degrading and has a big hole in it now, so it has quite a sound when you rev it into the 5-6k category. (Boy does it vibrate the car at those rpms though ) That engine sounds good period, I should make a recording of it, just for kicks. It sounds better than the GM or Ford V6 van engines, at least the older ones. The new ford freestar with its 3.8 liter V6 is a beast....sounds deep, and its very powerful.

The sound of a WRX boxer was very nice. At idle it had a nice muted burble but then it screamed with the turbo at 6000rpm's gobbling up air. I had the 2.0L but I presume the 2.5L sounds even more powerful.

Are you sure you want a 6.9 as a project car.

The exhaust note is sweet though. Sets of car alarms when you blip the throttle off idle.

That video of that 500E made me want one! WOW.

I'd much rather have a 420cdi though 600+ lbs of torque? WOW.

A quick googlevideo search....this one has a decent exhaust and sounds like it has some size to it.

Still need a clip of our engines

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-710827968275406135&q=VW

How about a bug engine turning a 6.86 in the quater ;D

The 4 banger in my bimmer sounds pretty mean. It rumbles, spits, farts, screams and makes a beautiful sound from the rush of air after 5500 RPM. The 617 sounds pretty cool, but it doesn't get my heart pumping like the BMW engine. I can't even hear the turbo on my 617

I'll have to make a video of both.

What about a pancake 4-53 turning 2400rpm? Sounds ultra BAAAAD but, does little more than turn diesel into heat and noise. Our shrimper would absolutely HOWL at you...they don't call 'em screamin' Jimmys for nothing!

OTOH, the German 3-cyl, N/A, 40hp engine in my Deere 2040 sounds like it wants to go to work just sitting there idling...I love hearing that little jewel hunker down and swing a shredder through tall grass; it will work all day long on a teacup of fuel too.

Heard a L4 scream on motorcycles?
I hate Neons but the srt4s are faaaasssst!
Nothing as nice as a flat 4 rumble (unequal length headers) except the flat 6!

My Honda is pushing 200HP out of 1.6 liters.(in a 2,100 pound chassis)....and nobody can say any 4 cylinder turning 9,200 rpm does not sound agressive. No mine does not have a fart tube. But it does have a 2.5 inch mandrel bent exhaust system from the header collector to the back bumper, And yes it does have a 2.5 inch high flow Cat converter too. Of course it has dual progile cams (Vtec) since the profile I run on the secondary would not let the engine idle below 2K since its a VERY radical profile, too much for the street on a single profile cam. And yeah the rest of the engine is such it does flow at those RPM's....no its not a stock engine. Its a 1991 Japanese market B16A1 thats been worked over a bit. And it still passes a strict dynomometer based emmisions test.

Remember the Indy cars and the offy engine...that was a 4 banger.

True nothing sounds like an american V-8 , I'll give you that.

Time to drag out the big gun. The top three cars in my book with exhuast notes that will make your hair stand up are the Ferrari 250GTO, Zonda S and an F1 car going full tilt.

Listen to the Zonda sing, they left out the best part in the clip, going through a tunnel. Powered by the old M120 V12, the guys at AMG have fun turning it into this monster. It has 4 valves per cylinder and four overhead cams, the entire valve train is titanium. 7.3L and will rev sky high all day long.
