Exclamation Help!!!!!

I hate to say this but my 83 240d has been sitting in the driveway begging for a drive i cant give it. it seems that a sway bar end brok off about a month after an alignment. I went to the dealership to price a new sway bar and stealer wanted $280!!!! so i got to reading on the forum and i managed to find a small snipit of someone who managed to weld an end on to the sway bar. if this is possible please give me more info and pics!!! i really really really miss my car. i almost have the interior restored and ive updated almost all wiring internal and external...performed a few modifications under the hood and will be turning my attention to a tranny swap and repaint providing i can drive my baby again. please help im desperate being a poor college student!!!!

if it was me id buy a new sway bar.. i wouldnt trust the welds no matter how good they were done... 280$ is cheap compared the bill you get when you mash a jersey barrier

Yeah, you can't weld that.. it's made of spring steel and it looses its springiness when heated it'd twist those welds apart on the first speedbump..

I think you might take another look at the sway bar. I'd venture a guess to say that the alignment shop might have something to do with it...

That swaybar is FORGED from a 7/8" steel bar!!

I'd be the guy doing an alignment didn't align the dowel pins going thru the swaybar and it created a stress point. like tempered glass, only on a MUCH slower scale...anyway enough of my ramblings!

yeah, just buy a new bar or sue the shop and get a newer benz to play with till the old one gets fixed...

Good luck hope you get that fixed real soon before the benz withdrawls start happening

No junkyards locally? We have two types around us...several 'pick your own part' types, and a few that will pull a specific part on request.

As an alternative, you could also try car-part.com, specifying local suppliers that wouldn't kill you with shipping.

The bar is cheap compared to the cost of the new interior. Plus a tranny and a paint job?

Heck, spend the $280 and be done with it.

Cheers,

Bill

check ebay..

Here's a link to one online, it just says 123 front swaybar so it should work for you. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280025633875&sspagename=ADME:B:AAQ:US:1

With 35 years of certified welding and fabrication, I would not attempt this unless I had a very well equiped shop. This can be done but the cost (I'd have to charge you at least $90/hour) would kill you. Heat treating, stress relief ... I'm guessing one day to relief stress and 3 hours labor... problay cost you $400 min. and because this is on a car, there would be no gaurentee and I would need the OEM specs or another good sway bar. Also if my insurance co. found out I did this they would squeel like the little piggies they truly are.
Buy a used one.

The search button is real easy to use. Hit the button and type in "Sway bar". Without the quotes of course.
If you want a link with pictures look for posts with the little paperclip icon.
I'll even make it easier for you, you can jump right to page 2. Or you can search for the user name "Peter Burton" in an advanced search..

Man oh man....don't they teach anything in college these days.
