I can go 500 miles on a full tank with my 83 300d and still make it to a service station. I know I'm pushing it, but it's true. Last time I checked I was getting about 26-28mpg.

my 240 gets 24, sometimes a bit less, not usually much more. seems like i might have seen 27-28mpg at one early point, but im not sure i knew how to figure it out then.
i drive it like a normal car... rush hour, modern interstate in the city, around campus 20 times to find parking. i dont worry about it a great deal, when i do the oil, i do the fuel filters. when i can see smoke at redlights at night-- i do the air filter. these cars really arent made to be economical but theyre also not made to be excessivly thirsty, either. thats the best thing about these guys. theyre right in the middle of the fence. nothing radical(expensive hybrid batteries and super dooper star trek gauge pods), nothing gimmicky(refrigerators in consoles or 20" chrome wheels). just a plain old car that is competent at what it does. cant the idle affect mileage figures? i guess maybe that'd be related to timing and all the adjustments?

I have owned one turbo diesel (617) and two non-turbo (617). The turbo got in the neighborhood of 24-28 on the highway, but usually closer to the 24figure; the non-turbos could never do better than 19-22. My current non-turbo wagon (1979) has a rebuilt engine and is in excellent shape. I have never gotten better than 22 mpg.
Having read numerous fuel economy posts on this forum, I am convinced that many people engage in self-delusion on this subject. The cars are only performing as well as they were designed to perform. W. Robert Nitske's Mercedes-Benz Production Models Book lists 21.5 mpg for the non-turbo 617. From my experience, that's about right. For their day, MB 617s were decent on economy; by today's standards, they are not so great. They have other redeeming qualities, however, which I suspect is why we love them. Joe B. |

The odo is broke on the SD but I tend to drive about the same each week. I would guess I am getting about 20mpg's now, the engine is in decent tune. if I spent a bit I could probably bump that up a couple mpgs.
Even the SDL doesn't do that great, I average a steady 23.5 with that and on a long highway trip will just touch 28.

I did a 160 mile run down to visit my aunt at about 80mph and I got 20. I'm filling up tomorrow(payday) and I know its already much better. I haven't checked it since then but I've been a little more conservative. I think this one will be around 23. I can probably get a little more because I think my tires need a little air and we had a really cold snap a few days ago and I spent a lot of time idling.

I am getting about 22.8 in my car right now, with a pretty even split between city and highway.

now i am really beginning to feel happy about my consumption. I have a 79 300TD NA and the best i could do in city driving is 7km/L.
Doing the conversoin of 19MPG (1 US G = 3.785L) = 8.1KM/L. I believe that we (Philippines) have some of the worst traffic conditions around hence my 7km/l consumption. Excluding the fact that my foot is quite heavy. I even once had a consumption of 5.5KM/L this was when i drove the car around as if i was racing with everyone on the road. The car runs well, some noise, but nevertheless quite peppy. Oil changes and filter changes are done regularly every 3500KM-4500KM. It doesnt go over 5000KM without being changed. Though not much i can say about keeping the car rust free..

I am getting 20 mpg in my 300D Turbo. Mostly city driving hurts the mpg the most, and am sure the CA crap under the hood hampers it some as well. This is with EGR and ARV vacuum lines plugged. I have done valve adjustment and that gained 1 or 2 mpg but have not attempted fuel injection timing.

hmm. you're a Filipino?? anyway.. yes.. 7km/L. Considering the traffic here, i'd say it should be normal.
Even the dealers here consider the driving conditions here as "harsh" due to the traffic and constant stop and go (more on stop).

In my 300Dt with manual tranny, I'm getting 19-22mpg (US). 17mpg is my worst on record.
