Any ideas

I have an 83 300sd, and an 81 240d 4spd. The question is what should I do?
The sd needs interior and cosmetic work along with a tranny soon due to flare and leaks. The engine runs awsome and the kkk charger builds boost like a champ. Other than being ugly due to poor hygine the car hits the road excellent! The 240d has great interior and great paint with some minor rust. Manuel everything as you all know, but its just so slow compared to sd. I want to take both and make one superturbo diesel. Can the 4spd go in sd or can sd engine go in 240d? How can I get more bang for the buck? Both cars drive great and run great, but i can't feed all 10 of my cars so maybe I can combine some of them Thanx

I wouldn't mix them, but that's just me. I'm a big fan of the SD, if there is little or no rust I'd concentrate on that. The transmissions aren't that bad to rebuild, I bet less work and frustration than adapting a 4 speed.

Personally I am in exactly the same boat. 82 240D and a 81 300SD.

Here is what I did (and am doing):

make the 240D real nice and sell it. Its not worth cutting up if its a good driver and everything works....frakensteining the car with a 617 in front of the 4 speed will be "fun" but never as fast as an automatic transmission

Sell your 240D and keep the SD to fix up nice. My interior was crap but I am slowly making it better as I find nicer and nicer things to replace inside.

The w126 body has a lot more room for playing with modifications and the stickshift tranny is not a good candidate for a high speed car unless you love stickshifts like no other. A properly built 722.3 auto tranny will smoke even the fasest driver smashing into each gear....it all about the boost heh.

What is wrong with the tranny in your SD?

What is the fluid like? Burnt? Dark? It may just be a problem with vac. adjustments or a bad modulator.

The sd tranny fluid is pink. The flaring is 2-3 and will hold as long as you hold more than 28% throttle. The sd has euro lights and needs almost everything inside. Three windows are trashed and sun roof is slow as h... The 240d isnt worth crap but as far as a road car with fresh rubber and some fuel damn you cant kill it or beat it. I did sell it once and ended up repoing(sp) the thing. After new clutch, master, slave, hose, and haft shafts.....it rides awsome. It could use some boost though

Have you done a search regarding the K1 spring?

this could solve your flare and its an easy job to do.

My SD was rough when I got it too...but its slowly coming along. The sunroof is still slow but I have the grease to fix it

Yes I have done the searching. Thats why I have chosen to post. I'm just looking at overall fun and cool factor. I love the 126 compared to the weak but robust 123. Its just the 126 needs alot to be able to stand up beside the 240d. So hence the question. I'm not afraid of fixing the auto but it will cost more than doing something with everything....if that makes sense. It seems most people here are car fans with tools a very dangerous combination

You don't say where you are in the world.

I was able to purchase from original owner a front end
damaged car and redo my whole interior, and more, for
pretty cheap. Salvage value about 500 to 700 if you
find someone who is not aware of the value.

I am just finishing restoration on W123 300D and W126 300SD.
Personally, I am looking forward to driving the SD all the time.
Although the 300D has its workhorse merits.

the sd motor will

go into the 24o just fine. several have done it here.

i dont know if the pedal cluster from the 240 will work in the sd or not. my parts guy says they are different part numbers but some here say they will interchange.

the 240 has the simple manual ac controls and is lots simpler to keep on the road. with a turbo motor it wont be much harder.

if putting the sd motor int he 240 you will need a rad the ds shortened and will need to swap out the rear diff. i am not sure if the sd rear bolts in or not. it may. also the speedo needs to be changed. i dont know if the sd speedo will work in the 240 or not. also the shift rods would need shortened.

whatever you decide, good luck.

Yes what about the 4spd into the sd? Would that be worth considering?

If you are really bent on having a stick, it can be done. Takes basically similar stuff to what tom was mentioning before...just a lot of project time R&R
