A sad day. Crankshaft problem

I was driving last night, my 300d broke down, had to have it towed, took it to a reputable mercedes shop. They said it may be the crank shaft that went, but will know more in a day or so.

If the crank shaft is totally bad, they recommended to replace the engine with a used one due to cost.

How difficult would it be to replace a crank shaft?
Would it be worth it?
Would it be better to get a used engine?

I am very sad. I have only had the car for 2 weeks and dont want to spend more on the engine than I paid for the car.

Any advice?

Thank you as always

Sorry to hear of your predicament, but did the harmonic balancer come off and cause the crank to bend?

Maybe you could now buy another car that's the same year and color as yours but that's maybe been wrecked so you can use it's engine as well as remove other parts from it as you need them. You would then have a spare gearbox in reserve too.

Right now I dont know about the harmonic balancer, but should by monday. I already started looking for a used merc that may have body damage, so far no luck.

thank you though.

I was told by my mechanic when my crank went it was going to cost about $2000 to replace the crank. I feel for you.

I really feel for ya man, I know of a local junkyard that has a 300D motor (same engine) that the oil fill cap was taken off of some time ago. RUSTY!! I asked them and they said they'd let it go with starter, turbo, and injection pump for $150. I am thinking of getting it for a genset engine, as a little ATF will free her up ASAP!

If you're interested, it might make for a cheap source for a crank.

Let me know. Best bet is email. matthew@icsrepair.com

I looked at an '82 today that something was locked up solid down there. You could move the cam back and forth about 1/8" and that was it. The odo is showing 380k+ miles with absolutly no rust on the body. The car is being parted out. Sorry to hear of your predicament.

i suggest

getting a detailed report of what is needed and post here so we can look at it.

cranks dont just go bad spontaniously. what are the circumstances under which you bought it? maybe some recourse from your seller.

Right now I wont know anything till bout monday as the shop is closed on the weekend. I called the seller, who works on mercedes, just waiting for his call back. He may be able to do something for me, but not sure till I here from him. I know that the seller is reliable and he replaced a few parts before selling it to me.

As soon as I know more I will post what I find out

Thank you all for your concern and great comments
