Limited Slip for 201?

I see a couple of possibilities. The 16V 190E had a limited-slip diff, but a different ratio. Can I use the carrier in a 16V's differential with my stock 2.65:1 gears? How about the carrier from an SEL?

I'm getting really tired of having one wheel spin when it shifts in a curve, would sure be nice to find a way to put in a used limited-slip. If anyone has any suggestions, I'm ready to hear them.

Anyone know a little about these differentials? Viable swap, another limited-slip donor?

donor car can be W124 or W201. ASD diff have some kinda LSD even when it's not activated. diff is wider than normal, so you have to swap drive shafts as well. those can be found from W201 2.3-16 with factory ASD. i have no idea how well ASD holds without hydraulics, probably it's not worth swapping after all.

this is how open rear can accelerate from 0 to 60mph in a 190D Turbo:

i'm sure it's possible to sqeeze some tenths off with LSD rear.

threadjack!

The 190D that went 0-60 in 5.78 seconds...it was dropped from an airplane to achieve this? Don't wanna be a hater, but really...that ain't a legit time for a stock 2.5T. You got some 'splainin to do or...

I don't know what 124s came with LSD, my only 124 was a 4matic and it had hydraulics to lock it so, ...

I get a lot of wheelspin going into second, not a problem on a dead-pedal launch with the 2.65:1 rear screw but that 1-2 shift is eating tires. On any kind of curve also, difficult to take off fast because the boost comes on strong before the 1-2 shift and the inside tire won't stay stuck. I do miss the quattro sometimes, ...

So it sounds like the 190 16valve diff carrier will fit the 2.65 gears? And the only other direct-swap differential guts would be a 124? I can look into the 124 LSD thing, and a used 16V diff can probably be found, I really like the 2.65 gears so I'm not willing to change that.

Thanks, and any further tips are much appreciated.

BTW, I haven't timed mine, but the brochure spec. 9.5second time seems very believable on my stock car. I suppose that a two-footed launch to get the boost on before releasing the brake would improve times but not going to happen in my car.

Maybe you have a vacuum leak somewhere causing an abnormally harsh 1-2 shift.

Good suggestion, but it shifts very nice and soft at moderate throttle, it's when I stick my foot in it that it gets loose. I'm not used to 2WD, so I usually just go when I am ready to, and having a wheel spin even at full-throttle is irritating. The limited-slip will certainly make the car more driveable and I'd like to do it, just need to figure out parts compatibility so that I can look first for used.

The roll of duct tape sitting on the left side of the engine compartment is a nice touch. Never know when you're going to need that.

Hijack:
I can spin the tires on the 1-2 shift on my 1988 300TE. I dont think that there is a vacuum leak, but I think it is more or lass just the shift point. It will pull to redline. I don't do it often, but when I do, its cool to see she still has it in her, and she still has power.

probably you've seen these videos, but you can see how Finn-Spec diesels run: http://www.teamrwd.com/dieselboost/videos/dslboost05.wmv

no need to drop from the plane to accelerate low 5's from 0 to 60mph. mine is not full Finn-Spec, it's just a slightly modified and with small engine.

ASD rear is full LSD diff. probably it could done more agressive by adding clutch plates in order to increase initial torque? then there will be no need for external hydraulics.
