Even better! You don't even have to take your manifold off to clean it. The worst thing you have to worry about is a light oil film on the inside.

It's been suggested that the EGR gives performance benefits by changing the properties of the burn, but I say hooey. The proper setup for this engine is the one Mercedes provides given a choice. Nobody stopped them from installing EGR's on their Euro models. They chose not to. If it made the engine run better or gave better milage, I guarantee that they would have installed one.

An exhaust gas recirculation valve is used on any internal combustion engine to lower the combustion chamber temperature to help prevent oxides of nitrogen from forming. NOX + HC (from any sourse) + sunlight = photochemical smog. It adds burned exhaust gasses to cut down on the volumetric efficiency of the cylinder. On a gasser it adds exhaust gas at all times except idle and WOT. On a diesel it is on full at idle.

Disconnect it on a gasser (except OBDII) and the fuel economy increases slightly but it might set a code on OBDI engines.

Disconnect it on a diesel and the only effect is that you will not be spewing crap into your intake manifold.

It's only on a part throttle (pedal). It's never on at idle or WOT, gas or diesel.

Play with the EGR and a manual vacuum pump on the valve. It can stall the engine at idle and it will run like snot at WOT.
