breather issues

i have a 1982 300D with over 400k on it, the car runs good, but i have oil comming out of the oil breather cap. is there some sort of pvc or oil breather that could be clogged that would cause this ? i would really hate to get rid of this car.
thanks

oil breather cap?

not quite sure which part you are refering to, but there are both updated oil filler caps (plastic instead of metal - by the way, I believe the metal ones are the same as the gas fill cap) and oil breather tubes (all rubber, no hard tube that goes go from the valve cover to the air filter housing)

I have both the new oil filler cap and breather tube and it helps a lot on leaks on the top of the motor

the problem

also can be in the oil separator, i think. i am not familiar in detail exactly how this works but its intent is to separate oil from the blow by so that the oil can run back into the pan. and if it malfunctions too much oil will be in the blowby causing problems.

not a big deal but i dont think the metal caps are same for gas and oil fill. it seems i have tried that one unsuccessfully.

Don't Get Drastic

Sounds like an easy fix and I can't think of many more possibilites than what has been mentioned. Probably just need the newer updated breather hose. It is a good cheap place to start. If yours is crusty it could cause all sorts of leaks.

Something like this shouldn't make you think of getting rid of it. Your car must be in pretty good shape for something little like that to scare ya. The only thing that makes getting rid of one of these is if a bomb explodes in your engine bay. Then you might have some serious problems.

Putting on the flat breather hose is a good idea. Another posibility is your blow by may be a little high. Most of these old relics have a pretty high blow by rate.
