Know something Hattie? I used to be convinced that the refined nature of the 350 was due to the engine design. It got the same mileage as the 3.0 liter, was inaudible at all speeds (like an MB gasser).
With the exception of the mileage (30 mpg out of a 3.5 liter diesel). I've found that much of that has to do with the exhaust and more extensive soundproofing. There is no possible way anybody could tell my 350SD had a 300 engine in it under normal driving circumstances. Why couldn't they make the 300 this way! What extra soundproofing measures did MB take? In this way ALONE the '91 W126s are superior.
It still has that deep bass growl at idle with an occasional injector clock. Sounds great, and I am really happy with how things have worked out so far.
