help trans is freakin out man

OK guys, normally i would be able to fix anything on al old diesel benz but this time its got issues with the trans i think. I have a 1983 240d with the 722.118 transmission. yea i know i should swap for the four speed but thats comming latter this summer when schools out for me. so the problem developed when i took a ride down to my local wally world to get some nice delvac oil for my car when my transsmission decided it didnt want to give anything up and it wouldnt shift to the next gear under a small load until it hit the little tic mark on the spedometer (max shift point?). it does this in all the gears. the funnny thing is that the kick down hasnt worked since i bought the car but now it kinda does. if i get it in to fourth gear and coast to the desired lower speed it will stay down in fourth under any load until i kick it all the way and hit the switch. when the switch in pressed it will drop down a gear. whats the deal...can anyone help me??? thanks, Luke

ATF level is ok?

carwithfarts 02-28-2006 02:26 PM

yeah i have plenty of fluid...ive been looking around in i really think something broke internally or the modultor got pluged up...i have no idea at this point i wouldnt think its the modulator because if i turn it counter clockwise it brings the shift points down from max but only a little bit not a strong change.

fluid color, whens the last time it was changed, and at what miles
what kind of fluid did you use?

A fluid, and filter change cant hurt it... Id do that right away (but... if $$'s an issue, might want to wait)

sorry man

tranny

I recently bought a 1985 300 td w/ 144k and after driving for a week the trans (automatic 4 spd) started acting weird. One day it would not shift up to higher gears except at really high rpms. I took it to a shop the next day (it shifted fine on the way to the shop!!) They told me the vaccuum lines:confused: were misrouted and generally screwed up by previous owner. They fixed ($250) and it drove fine again. The next day it did it again for about 10 miles and has been fine since (??) I have been driving it for about 3weeks since and it has not done it again. Shop guy said I should have trans serviced -fluid change, filter etc anyway. I'm leery of this as I hear sometimes it's better to not change fluid if it hasn't been done on regular basis - but I don't really know **** about this. Any suggestions ?

Change your fluid and filter and then recheck.

im gonna change it this weekend but i think ive spotted a decent auto for cheap but not sure if its worthe the trip anyone got one they want to get rid of for 350 or under???

carwithfarts 02-28-2006 05:59 PM

i have the actual vaccum diagram for the engine and checked the connections. the plug on top of the valve cover seems to be pretty loose. i wonder if that may be causeing a vaccum leak so bad to make my trans act so goofy. thanks everyone for you input. eventually ill get to the bottom of this.

Might want to do a search for "Trans-X" also.

carwithfarts 02-28-2006 10:24 PM

trans-x......what is it and where do i get it???
i dont like the idea of having to replace the filter twice...maybe im not understanding

mdisav 02-28-2006 10:34 PM

Disconnect the kickdown switch and see if things change. If you adjusted the modulator on the transmission it is probably a good idea to put it back for its longevity.

carwithfarts 03-01-2006 10:45 PM

how does one go about setting the modulator correctly? is there a procedure that would allow me to set it with out having to keep jacking the car up after several test drives??
