Idle Speed
Slowly getting there with this diesel van but couple more things to sort
first off the idle speed is a bit low, seems to shudder a lot and the engine rocks about a lot in the bay, if i crack the throttle open the tinyest of amounts the idle smooths right out and the engine runs sweet, ive tried adjusting the throttle cable but it reaches the end of its adjustment before it takes up the slack in the linkage so the idle doesnt increase is there any other points of adjustment? perhaps on the pump itself? cheers Kevin |

well you can purchase a new idle cable or what you can do is get an small cable clamp (usually used on mountain bike brakes) and put it on the end of the cable to take up slack. if you cable has streched that much though you prolly want to replace it. ~Luke

On some MB diesels there is a knob on the dash that adjusts the idle, I believe that is what he was talking about. What engine is in this van? There may be a bolt on the IP to adjust the idle. Hard to say with out knowing what engine.

Do you have a manual idle adjustment knob?

there is no manual adjustment knob on the dashboard nor under the bonnet, i guess there must be either a screw on the pump or someway of adjusting the throttle linkage
i noticed on the very bottom arm of the throttle linkage theres a rod that attaches to the injector pump with two balljoints and what looks like a threaded bar in the middle, if i screw this out a bit will it raise the idle as though im sitting with my foot lightly on the throttle? its starting and stopping like it should now which is good (apart from having to cycle the glowplugs at least once but thats probably due to it being a high mileage motor that needs the plug holes reamed or something) just need to sort the alternator and this idle issue and she'll be as good as new |
