Oil cap stuck?!

After having the car for a year, I figure it is about time I did the oil changes myself. (The dealer here has $29 oil changes, so whenever I go to get parts, it's just too convenient.)

Anyway, I do quite a bit of other work on the car (brakes, shocks, motor mounts, etc.), but never had to take the oil cap off. It won't turn either CW or CCW as well as push down. What am I doing wrong?

Jason

nothing it should twist of counter clockwise then you pull up. i just lost my old oil cap last week... i dont know what happened but it apears that the clips broke...if you break yours you can get one from the dealer for under seven bucks but if i were you id just take it back and complain and let them fix it~Luke

Sometimes the 617 requires a massive grip to release the cap. One of those quirks. I've got giant hands that can easily palm a basketball with very strong fingers and, on occasion, it takes every last bit of grip to release the cap.

Jut put a pair of pliers on it.......protect the plastic if possible........and turn the cap counter-clockwise.

Before you get it out order new seals. Chances are they're dry and brittle. Happened to me.

I had the same trouble and replaced the cap.

They told me that all that was available was a hard rubber cap so I took it.

Now, it is next to impossible to get off and I want another metal one. Sounds like they really are available and that I was mislead.

They don't make the metal oil caps anymore, only plastic, though the metal fuel caps they still make are the same thing as the old metal oil caps, so you can buy one of those.

Hi Addicted,

Thank you! If I may say so, I got myself addicted to these cars (wagon is mom's).

By the way to those who replaced the oil caps with the rubber/plastic black ones, the seals are narrower and are not compatible should you decide to buy their seals. I got 3 "OEL" caps from the junkyard and replaced two of their seals and installed on both W123s. No more oil leaks and easy to twist off. Kept the black oil caps though, they were still good.

While I agree with HTown, the fuel filler caps are now different if you buy them new (have a different handle). But I agree, those ones should fit easily too.

It can take a bit of effort to remove that cap on some cars. Don't know why. Just use some pliers and get a better grip.

one (two actually) part that still works pretty well.

Some of my MB's have caps that are easy to take off and some aren't. I had a 190E 2.6 that needed a pair of channel locks to get the cap off.

the

newer cars with the plastic caps are much tougher than the old metal caps.

If you have the new style plastic cap they sometimes can be a pita to get off. I have noticed that with certain engines you really have to put some force into it.

Don't worry you won't break it, even if you do they are only a few bucks.

well, you could allways try to apply heat, u know, loosen things up a bit?
Its a oil cap, force the bastager off, if it breaks, it was faulty to begin with... Id be pissed at the dealership... but over $7?
