Turbo not working. What is this picture?
I'm not sure what this part does. It has a line from the banjo bolt. It also has a line to the ALDA. There seems to be some sort of electronic switch attached between.
My turbo seemed to work briefly yesterday. I noticed it's performance waning (it was a rocket just after I did the diesel purge) I cleaned the banjo bolt. It had a medium amount of soot and gunk. It was not 100% blocked I would call it maybe 50%. After cleaning the banjo bolt.. I don't seem to have any turbo now. This was not a rapid change kind of thing. I know I didn't disconnect anything. Is this part involved? I havent recieved my ordered boost gauge yet. (where to I T that in?) Is there a way to troubleshoot the turbo? I read up a bunch of threads.. but I don't seem to be able to get a handle on the order of things I should be checking. Is there a way to manually bypass (for a short term run up in the driveway) the wastegate? Second Picture is my EGR. Did I do the bypass right? What is the small item with the vacuum line below the EGR? Thanks JP |

overfueling protection .. thing.. in the first pic
to check the turbo for shaft play and ease of spin make sure the car is off and engine cool put your hand in the turno inlet if you can after removing the u-tube.. spin the wheel and see if it spins with ease.. the next test is use your thumb or finger see if you can move the wheel forward and back or up and down also the second pic i have no idea what that is.. my 85 300D-T has it too.. i have a triple k turbo what do you have also you might want to get the kit to remove the EGR it makes everything look clean and if your egr was stuck open the blocked vacuum line wont do a thing |

the item you circled in the 2nd pic is the ARV or air recirculation valve. i not 100% sure, but i think it opens up at some points while driving to put compressed air from turbo back into the air filter. it is useless, and i disabled mine via the BB in the vacuum line.

The second picture is of the over boost protection valve on the turbo. I think on the OM617 engines only 85 had them. I think, but am not sure, they removed the over fuel protection in favor of this protection valve on the turbo on the 85s.
Edit: Check and see if you cracked the ALDA line. I did this once.

overboost protection
I just had the same problem with my turbo. Turned out the overboost protection module was plugged. In the bottom of the module it was completly plugged. I am not sure how to vacuum test the module but my understanding is that it should let air flow through it freely when the electrical connector is unhooked. A new one is around 40 bucks from the MB dealership.

Ok
I'm in the middle of draining the tank. Doing it with a long line attached to the main line next to the IP. It's slow.. but no mess. Dumping it into my home heating oil tank. (i had put in about 50% K1) It's slow going though.
I changed the oil while I was waiting. The turbo does spin freely. I will try and move it around. What kind of line would you use to replace these vacuum lines? They have some plastic tubing at the hardware store.. is that it? Need to find a big socket (hope I don't have to drive in town) to take off tank screen. So it's some sort of electrical connection to cut out the boost. Could I just connect the banjo bolt to the ALDA and bypass it? THanks much JP |

did you try using some channel lock pliers to get the screen out.. i used a channel lock on the fuel tank sender.. they should also work down there

You would think they would but the nut's not deep enough to get a good grip on it. Its hard to describe unless you actually get under there and look at it but there's some kind of shielding in the way that makes access with anything but the right size socket rather difficult. I tried it with some medium size and really large sized channel locks to no avail.

nope
Your right.. there is a shield of sorts. Couldnt get enough muscle on a pair of channel locks.
I borrowed (after leaving a 20 dollar bill) a socket. Trouble was.. sockets that big are 3/4 drive. with the adapter to 1/2 or even with a breaker bar... it was just TOO LONG. I couldnt fit it between the axle half and the screen. I ended up taking the air chuck and blowing everything out. All I could do. Tomorrow's project is the turbo. JP |

Russ
Russ-
On my 300SD.. the line goes from the banjo bolt to this little switch.. then to the ALDA. After my oil change, and tank drain.. all seems fine with the turbo. I got about 14 to 15 second 0 to 60. I used your kit for the fuel lines. There were two threaded hoses at the tank bottom. I replaced the one at the screen. I did the injector return line kit I bought as well. I had one hose that wasn't long enough. The #1 injector to the fuel filter line is about 18" long. I'll give a call with my next order, and get the couple bits and pieces I need. THanks for helping the other day. I ended up putting in a straight pipe, and a simple muffler. Works great. JP |

Try checking the boost pressure lines
I ran into this a few years ago - my turbo hadn''t worked since the day I got the car - I assumed it was toast and paid accordingly. I always had planned to fix - one day it kicked in for an afternoon and then didn't work after that. After considerable testing/research, I determined that (on my 87 300D) it was the fault of a "programmed repair" which was intended to stop the cruise control from surging as a result of the turbo kicking in and out when the cruise engaged. Effectively, it's purpose was to slow the responsiveness of the turbo but a restrictor had plugged and was preventing boost pressure from getting to the control at all.
Below are the pics - the diagrams are from RA 07.1.1051-0250 - "Retrofitting Damper with Restriction Orifice" - see pictures of this on the car: The 1st picture is the area to find this mod The 2nd is the "accumulator" (see #4, Diagram 1) The 3rd is the restrictor that plugged up in my case (#61c in Diagram 1) The 4th is Diagram 1 The 5th is the parts list of all the items in diagram 1 As per above, part 61c in the diagram had filled with oil and the restrictor was completely blocking the boost line (except that one afternoon, strangely...) I removed it and bought another but it slowed my turbo performance so I removed it entirely. Has worked perfectly ever since! Moral - if you have the 87 300D, check here first. If not, ensure that your boost pressure lines are clear before undertaking much more, it's very easy to check (just follow the lines along and ensure that they're clean...) Someone please let me know if it's NOT ok to post the diagrams... Good luck, Chris Last edited by Chris_87_300D; 03-09-2006 at 12:03 AM. |

Something about a link with the word "pirate" in it tells me it is not a good idea to click on it. I have seen that sort of thing happen before.
