blondie is blowing grey/black smoke at start. i am guessing the manifold gasket is going, going, going. i have a new one. do i have to apply stickum or just bolt it in place?

when I did mine, I just bolted it in without any sealants. No leaks still (a year later) Although, you will probably want to torque those nuts to the right spec.

Guessing and throwing money at it wont help.

Are you getting smoke out from under the hood? Or just out the tailpipe?

all the smoke comes from under the hood. blondie has always been louder than red. i thought it might have just been the lack of a hood pad.

well its snowing right now and the carharts are wet from laundry(cleaning off a large splash of wvo) so i will check tomorrow. i drove blondie again today and it has the sound of a bad muffler coming from under the hood.

btw a purple bottle of zout does a great job of cleaning grease and dirt and the occassional wvo spill on work clothes.

What I found on the 1982 300D was that over time, the intake/exhaust manifold nuts loosened up. I don't remember too much extra exhaust noise, but the oil mist flowing in the intakes tended to condense and run out down the side of the engine. Anyway, when I got the new manifold gasket I found the new design of the replacement is superior to the original equipment. Around each port there is a metal seal running around to keep gas out of the "sandwich" area between the two metal surfaces.

And, to answer your question, there's nothing needed to put extra on the gasket. It compresses and seals on its own.
