I have the drivers door panel off my 1987 300 sdl to replace the window regulator and thought it may be a good time to try and figure out what is wrong with the locking mechanism. For the past month I have been having problems locking the door with the key. Sometimes I can lock the door if I turn the key and pull the handle out. The door locks without problems from the inside, when I push down the plunger. All of the other locks work. I can lock the car with the key using the trunk or the passengers side. I dont think this is a vacuum problem, but rather a mechanical problem with the drivers lock. Any thought or suggestions on a fix.

Had the same problem with my 300SD. Turned out to be the door lock mechanism gizmo. Ended up purchasing a new unit keyed to VIN and never have had any more problems
