1980 300D, why no passenger door mirror?

A 1980 300D that I will probably soon add to the stable does not have a passenger door mirror from the factory.

1. why?

2. Is it an easy retrofit. I can easily pick one up from a local boneyard if needed.

Easy, easy retro-fit.

I found one on E-bay, for about 20 bucks, and it took about 20 minutes to install, including a very good cleaning of the old mirror. (1982 240D)

at least in the case of my '79 cadillac, given to me by my great-aunt, the order form for the car has a check list of optional items, one of which is 'passenger side view mirror.' the 'decline' box next to it is marked. happily, she did not decline (athough i have no idea why not) the 'heavy-towing package' so it came w/ a 7.0 litre V-8. awesome engine until you have to fill it up w/ gasoline!

good luck w/ the car--

yea I agree it looks lame without a passanger mirror. Now the hard thing is to find a manual controled pass mirror since only 1982 & maybe 1981 had them. after that its electrical. But hey you can mount a electric one no prob & just adjust it by moving the mirror glass by hand.

Do NOT even think about getting one without the "objects are closer than they appear" type of glass. 100% better view.....
Trust me on this one!

i agree with all of the above. but i prob would use a manual mirror if i could find one and put the 'closer' glass in it as a retrofit.

Hey - JimmyL - where does one get a side glass
that works like the "objects are closer than they appear".

For my first time ever, about two weeks ago, I drove my 300SD
with side mirror and noticed how much it totally ... did not work.
Flat simple mirror glass is horrible on the passenger side, I cannot even see
my blind spot.

My solution was a little radical. I switched from an '80 wagon to an '85 wagon!!
I'm not sure of the difference in the "guts" of the two, but if you put an electric mirror over there without the power to it, you can just adjust it by hand and they really never move.

The early right side MB mirror sucks, big time. I just stuck on a big oval fisheye mirror. The old flat glass version is worthless.
