What $$ do they go for? 300D
 

I am probably purchasing a 1980 300D sedan...non turbo, one onwer, 61K miles, near perfect interior, a/c does not work, some rust on the lower inside of the doors, exterior is pretty good shape. Probably garaged 85% of its life. Runs great. Just a plain jane 300D, not even a sunroof or passenger side door mirror.


I'll probably let my wife drive it back and forth to work for the next few years. It might have 65K by then :) She drives 1.9 miles round trip :)

What $$ do they go for?

I just sold my folks' '79 240D 140K miles, plain jane but zero rust, a/c works and all service docs and major services up to date..$2700

discount for rust and a/c...service records?? real milage?? make an offer comfortable to you and seller.:)

I would find that low of mileage VERY hard to believe. It is most likely a broken odometer or a tampered with one. If not you are finding what is called a time capsule.

To be honest I would rather have a car of this age have 150K miles because cars that sit are not good.

I would say its worth from $1000-$2500 due to rust

i doubt its worth 2500 at the most i paid 2500$ for a 300D-T but i over paid.. if i was you IMHO id rather spend at least 2500 on an 85 300D-T by that year they sorted alot of the problems out plus you get a nice car that a school bus cant pass you.. and ive read here the turbodiesels get better fuel milage.. but its your personal choice..

I just purchased a rust free '82 240D automatic with all maintenance records are up to date, original owner, for $1300. The car has 258k miles and all it needs is a brake job. The owner is 83 and can no longer drive. He told me about a week after I bought the car that he was not even aware his wife was selling it:eek: (she is 60). It is probably one of the best driving 123s I own right now. Funny thing is this guy is probably work $8mil and he tooled around in a 240D:). I have been coming accross quite a few ppl that have these cars AND have deep pockets to keep them in the best mechanical ocndition that they car:).

that car could be worth from 1500 to 4000 depending on condition. not enough detail to make a good evaluation. i recommend posting pics and lots more detail or taking an experienced mb person along to look at it.

Without a/c functional and with rust, it cannot be worth anywhere near $4K.

I'd suggest that it's value is somewhere between $1500 and $2000, however, it could be lower depending upon the actual mileage. I don't believe the odometer.

Florida tends to be a buyer market for MB's. Rust never sleeps... so the value of the car is lower right off the bat. It'd be a good buy at no more than $1800. Keep watching the market and you'll find what you are looking for at the price range you want to stay in.

If it were a museum piece, A-1, show-quality shining example of Benzlihood, with less than 2K miles, maybe I'd wager $12K. That's the most I would plunk down on one.

Its very VERY hard to determine the value of a car without seeing and driving one for yourself. When you drive the car, it will communicate to you what it is, and what its capable of, usually. If you have a load of experience (or common sense), when the car is trying to tell you something, you listen.

A fact is known that these cars should ride like living room couches on wheels when pushed on the highway. There should not be excessive noise from the engine, just a distant hum from the rear muffler. The idle should be fairly smooth, and the engine should be almost inaudible from inside the car. The steering should not have more than 1 inch of slop lest there may be something amiss in the box/system. The suspension should soak up any road irregularites with nearly no feeling of its surface and a distant thump-thump as one passes over. When cornering, the 123 body will roll quite a bit, but should remain manageable. A slight bit of understeer may be noticed at the limit.

There should be no blowby, whatsoever (63K).
All linkage should be recently greased, and the flexing of it should be smooth.

That's some of the criteria for a decently maintained car. There are many more things I could mention, but I'll leave it at that.

Non-turbo, with rust in the doors? Not more than 2K.

If the car is worth more to the seller, there are others out there.

I'd offer $1,500 and see if they bite. Its a buyers market, if they don't accept that $1,500 may start to look good in a month.

It my area it is not un commen to see old MB's rot on used car lots or in parking lots with for sale signs on them for several months.
