pitman arm question
I replaced my steering box on my 83sd, it was leaking bad and after reading many posts I diecided to use one I had on the shelf. I bought a 90 420 sel for the interour about a year ago and took that steering box and threw it on a shelf not knowing if it would work on the sd. Today I checked the part # and they were the same so I installed it, The only difference was the pitman arms. The one off my car was straight, The one from the 420 was slightly bent or curved so to say.I called the local mb dealership and requested the part number for both, It was the same part# for both cars. The stock pitman arms were different, yet benz replaces them both with the same one. strange, so I went ahead and installed the one from the 420 and it went together fine, the only difference is now the car[83sd]steers,well, better I guess, different, quicker, I'm not real sure , my question is,Would the bend in the pitman arm change how the car steers.? steve 83sd

I noticed the same thing. I swapped out my steering gear as well and the stamped on part numbers are a little different. It hasn't made any difference though. Maybe the V-8's need more clearance for the exhaust pipe on that side.

Warren, thanks for your reply, I guess it could be exhaust clearance related, never thought of that. steve 83sd
