We're at $2.65-2.79 here. Getting lousy mileage this time of year, too. Funny though, I don't think of it that much when I think of money woes. It just doesn't seem to be worth complaining about. It's a problem that's there, and it's going to be even more there as time goes on. Best thing to do is educate myself about the oil industry and some of the things that may happen here in our future (rather than groan and moan and blame the nearest Republican/SUV driver/gas company).
Fuel costs still don't tick me off anywhere near as much as taxes, medical bills and the like. Driving my diesel is still "worth it" to me, because I love the freakin' thing. Some people go to the movies, go out to dinner, buy drinks at the bar, buy shoes, etc. ... my car is my entertainment. I wish fuel prices were the way they used to be, but there are a lot of things I wish would go back to the way they used to be. Such is life.

All of you northeners who own well maintained '85 and earlier Diesels, please send them down to Florida where the weather is warm and the they run on WVO with no modifications all day long.

I the EU there are even more diesels on the roads there then we have and they pay less for diesel compared to gas. I think there's just someone screwing the American public just like for everything else.

lietuviai,
There are at least a couple of contributors to the problem with diesel fuel pricing as you see it. One, the federal and state tax structure has tended to attempt to extract payment for road damage from truck traffic by taxing diesel fuel. Logical, since over the road trucks primarily use diesel fuel, they just forgot about us. The other item is the fact that a good portion of the Northeast part of the US uses heating oil for home heat in the winter. This puts a strain on the supply of the diesel fraction, as the two are essentially the same. There are of course other local factors, and at least here in my area Diesel is usually priced lower than RUG in the summer months.

Lol yea, Gas in chicago went up to i think like $2.70 in alot of places, but my diesel still is sticking to $2.65. the reason gas prices are rising is because of the governemtn, THey are trying to raise and lower the gas prices so that you get used to them being so outragesly high, I remeber when gas was 1.45, but now 2.07 is "cheap" because they government wants to keep raising gas prices so that evently 2.90 will be "cheap"

$2.72 seems to be going up a few cents a week, $3 is just around the corner.

Well, until I see the days of diesel fuel coming back down to prices comparable to gasoline, I don't see myself ever dumping my gassers for diesels. I tried them for a while in the 80's when diesel was cheaper than gas but became frustrated with the availability when filling stations began discontinuing carrying diesel as diesel vehicles lost popularity. About three years ago I bought my first MB only as a curiousity. I needed a more economical vehicle but I didn't want to buy a Japanese car. I was driving down the freeway and I saw a smoking car zooming up the on-ramp. It wasn't a MB but I thought why not give a turbo diesel car a try. Diesel was cheaper at that time so I thought that might not be a bad idea.
So I started looking at turbo diesels for around $2000. The first one I saw was a Volvo 760 TD. I drove it but I didn't like it at all. It was slow, noisy, rattled, not very solid and didn't handle well. Then I saw the 300D. It was a total contrast to the Volvo. It was much quicker, not as noisy, handled well, felt really solid and well built. I liked it enough that I didn't want to look anymore and bought the car. Unfortunatley, not long after I bought the car, diesel fuel prices started exceeding that of gasoline. I already thought at the time that I made a poor decision but the fuel economy was still such that I could justify the premium. Now in the last year that premium is no longer justifiable. I tried running on WVO during that time and was very successful. I even bought another car to convert to WVO but never got around to doing it when my WVO supplies started fizzling out. So now I've got two cars I no longer want since I can't justify the expense to drive these cars. While they're good cars, probably better than most used cars out there, I think the money can be spent more wisely for something else now. I see nothing economical about them anymore if you need to use them as your essential transportation.
