1981 TD have a tach ??
Looking at an '81 300TD Turbo and noticed that the instrument cluster was like an NA 300D, there is no tach just the full size clock. Also there seems to be no cruise control hardware under the hood, although the control stick is on the steering column. Is this more likely a case of equipment removed, than not there from the start?? Any ideas welcomed, thanks.

The tach should be toward the right on an '81 with the clock next to it.

I would not trust the mileage on the odometer as the whole cluster could have been changed out.
The turbo wagon should have had the tach I believe. And the cruise unit under the hood could have simply been removed. But why????? Interesting, and worthy of a careful approach.....

Is it a turbo engine retrofit to an original NA wagon? Does it have the Turbo Diesel logo on the tailgate?

Yeah, it has the Turbo Diesel nameplate on the psgr side of the rear hatch, not too hard to add it though. However don't think that was done. Just seems strange that it has an instrument cluster without a tach. Agree that it could have been swapped out. Need to look under the hood for evidence of the tach!! Anyone out there have an 81 300TD? I am also thinking that the cruise hardware was probably removed, and not delivered without it. Of course it is possible to include the control stalk and not the rest. They did it with the coax cable on my '83. The odometer mileage is something over 200k and although the interior is not trashed it shows some wear. The brown or red-brown MB-Tex is probably correct for the year and not a redo. Will need to check the vin when I look at it next.
Jimmy, I think that Kerry was implying that it might be an 80 NA with a Turbo dropped in and then the PO or a previous PO called it an 81. That's why I want to verify VIN.

Our wagon (1981 300TD) doesn't have a tach but odo reads 371k. Seems authentic to me?
VIN decoder indicates it's a turbodiesel.

My '81 has a turbo, but came with no tach (I added one later though).
I bet the CC hardware was removed because (inevitably) the cruise died on that car long ago...

I also have an 81 turbo wagon without a tach. 287,000 on the odo, so it seems legit also.

Odd -- the EPC definitely indicates a tach...
