Car & Driver diesel articles

Sorry if this is old news, but the new C&D (April '06) has some great diesel reading. First, there's a "diesel beaters" article in which C&D staff members race an '80 300SD cross-country against an '82 Olds diesel and an '83 Datsun diesel. Each had to be purchased for under $1500 and run the distance. Second, there's a fascinating article on Audi's TDI powerplant for LeMans.

The R-10 will be racing at Sebring in 9 days. Speed channel will be covering it:cool:

Yeah, I also heard that a certain sportswriter in central Pa. has featured this car in her weekly column, which will run on the day of Sebring ... the automotive knowledge within said article will blow you away. :P

Ah ... OK ... so the automotive knowledge is patchy. But I get to put "auto racing" under my byline for the first (and probably only) time, and I do use a lot of big words, so it makes me sound moderately intelligent.

thats cool, can I have a sneek peek at the article? Can you draw my car too:D

I hope the darn Audi wins. Will show all those stinking gassers who is boss.

pmari 03-08-2006 05:28 PM

I predict it will win. AUDI has been dominating @ sebring for last 4 or 5 years with the R-8. They would not retire the R8 without good cause;) I will also perdict that the R-10 will win @ LeMans too.
BTW the R-10 has set a new record for fastest lap time @ Sebring:cool:

I can't wait to rub my racing Porsche buddy's face in it. I told him the diesels were comming 2 years ago! He laughed it off as a joke

I hope you are right. Then every wine sucking yuppie will want on.:D

The next best thing would be the 06 A8 TDI Quattro. If you can afford it, the 30mpg will mean nothing, but the performance is there:cool:

No sneek peaks ... release date is March 18 so start checking off the calendar boxes ... :D I'll post a link as soon as it goes up on our paper's Web site (I think I get extra points for creating webhits ... haha).

Sorry, no mention of MBShop ... it's only about the history of diesel sportscars, very light and jocular ... I throw a dibble of tech-talk around, but only the bare essentials. More of a sports history/arcana slant than anything. I use the word "gongoozler" at one point in the story, if that tells you anything about the tone.

Re: drawing your car. Actually, I'm usually glad to do commissions. I'd have to charge for it, though ... I used to just be able to do that kind of stuff for people as a friendly favor, but I'm not that well off financially these days, and art supplies = money. :( Could probably do it for much, much cheaper than a pro artist would charge though, if you're interested.

Don't forget the French

Peugeot is to return to Le Mans in 2007, planning to win the classic French event with a diesel powered prototype. The project could however face stiff competition from Audi which is believed to be working on a similar project.

Peugeot won Le Mans as a works team in 1993 with a clean sweep of the podium. The first prototype is due to run in December 2006 and the team will start racing in the Le Mans Endurance Series in 2007.

"This is an extremely stimulating new challenge and I am convinced it will generate considerable interest throughout our staff and across our sales networks," said Frederic Saint-Geours, managing director of Automobiles Peugeot.

Yep, already squeezed a mention of that into my article, as well as Lola's biodiesel plans. It was a tight column (and by "tight," I don't mean "cool") ... you have no idea how hard it is to contain something so interesting (to me) to a 28-inch column ... they still might try to cut it up to make it shorter. Ten pounds of, uh, stuff in a five-pound bag.
