Not An Oil Thread
Is there some way to tell if oil is dino or synth? Would putting it in a fry pan at high heat give an indication or maybe putting it in the freezer? I'm trying to figure out what what is in the engine of a car I just bought because if synth, I'll stay on it.
Thanks.

Put it in a glass, swish around a bit then sample. Dino should taste sour with a hint of sweetness. Synthetic is like a party in your mouth, and everyones invited. Well the good stock anyway, Mobil 2003 was a good year.
Seriously other then having a lab tes,t it I don't know how to tell them apart.

syn oil
Unrelated, but important point. The Fed's "truth in advertising" rules allow an oil producer to say "partially synthetic" if they only put one drop in the dino oil. I've not personally seen a "partially synthetic" that gives a per centage. What I would do is buy full synthetic and mix it with dino to know what you really have.

Why the heck would anybody want partially synthetic? Besides mixing them yourself disrupts the delicate balance in the additive package.

A lot of oil suppliers try to get away with that. Not even all Mobil 1 is created equal. For example Mobil 1 10w30 isn't a true synthetic.
