loud noise- valves?

i looked at a 1985 300TD today as a possible parts car and when i was driving it the car had a VERY loud tapping noise... is this caused by out of adjustment valves or is it something more serious... otherwise the car drove fine and seemed a little more peppy than my n/a 240D

Depending on how loud the noise is, it could be a cracked crank.

Mine makes a bit of a clicking noise that sounds like a film projector. I think it is an exhaust leak, but I have not taken the time to track it down.
