Won't Start 1983 300TD

OK. Of course Ive had this car about 3 weeks. Replaced the turbo on the 300TD and it was good to go. I started it 30 minutes ago to move it to this side of the street by my house. I went back in to show my wife how to start the car and all the little bells and whistles and it wouldn't start. It would only "click" So I figured the selenoid. I gave the top of the starter a little tap with the end of a hammer and nothing. Thought maybe could be the battery as we've had problems with the alternator before so I jumped it from my truck and nothing...still just clicks.

I have to go to class in 30 mins but was hoping to send my wife off back home (4 hours away in oregon) before the blizzard that is suppossed to hit in the coastal range tonight happens. I'm following in my truck later tonight. But anyway any ideas for a quick check for when I get out of class. It is tonight or never as I have to do some business in Eugene tonight. I was hoping to paint it this week on my spring break but if she doesn't go tonight then she will never go

I'll check this when I get back from class. Thank you.

Ohh and I've though I can get under there and try gong straight to the starter and seeing if it turns and I"ve heard that often it is just a ground strap.

Thank you

See if you can bypass the switch by using the jumper terminals on the passenger fender.

Ok 1 last question before class then so I can think about this.

So I can take the 2 terminals off from the fender (do you mean on the top of the fender) and run it strait to the two terminals on the starter. I can see looking at the starter the two terminals they connect to? I'm assuming if I can start it I can just run all the way home and not turn it off until then.

Ok so My wife didn't get to drive it home but I'm back in portland 8hours of driving through blizzards and we only see the snow once a year maybe....and I got the thing started in 2 minutes.....DOPE. Just hooked my plyers to the jumpers on the fender like DG said. So anyway I'm going to drive it home and work on it in a nice warm garage at my dads instead of up here in the snow.

Thank you

When you get back to that warm garage, you probably will find one of two things is bad: the key switch or the neutral sensing switch. The latter is attached to the transmission, passenger side I recall, its a box looking thing with a plug that attaches to it. It has to close the circuit back to the starter switch and allow current into the starter solenoid. The pliers jumper trick bypasses the key and the transmissio neutral sensing interlock. You still need to have a key to start the car because the fuel shutoff system is vacuum operated and ability to run is therefore determined by the "ignition" switch.

I had to use a couple of house keys on that terminal to start a car once. I had stopped for fuel and the car wouldn't start. We had a tow coming from 80 miles away, as I was in the middle of West Texas on Christmas eve, a terrible time to break donw in the sticks!
I was able to start the car we cancelled the tow, it would have taken them over an hour to get there so I was using my thinking cap to avoid the long wait when I remembered the three terminal starter concept. Ultimately I saved $$ and time.
It turned out the interlock switch on the transmission was gunked up with grease and all the oil that winds up at the lower rear portion of a leaky engine, so that might be your problem too. Stay warm!
