Lord knows how much I have read on the 603 engines! I'm not sure what the numerical nomenclature is for the 2.5 turbo, but what is the general consensus on this powerplant?
The navy blue paint on this little horse was also peeling itself and it's clearcoat. Zero rust and nice interior though....

I believe that it's the 602. Mine's a happy little diesel, I don't have much knowledge in its strengths/weaknesses though, if any.

Never really hear of anyone having any problems with them.

What vac problems? If the old pump fails the engine will be trashed! Other then that actually they seem to be durable vac pumps. Mine pulled vac well within spec at around 230k when I changed it.

I don't really see why they would have more trans problems then other MBs? Just remember with 190's they were the cheapest MB out at the time. I suspect a lot of people bought them who shouldn't have had MB's and didn't take care of them. If you don't change the fluid don't wonder why it slips.

The 2.5 turbo om602.128 is basically the same 6 cyl 603 engine with 1 cyl less.

but the

602 is thought to generally be pretty bulletproof. several things tend to be problems on the 603s which are not on the 602s. like heads and rod bending.

Went back and drove it again today. We have first and third gear. We do not have second and fourth. But that 2.5 turbo is a runnin' dude!!! And the weirdest thing. The AC feels really cool, but was only getting about a 70 degree vent temp. It felt as cool as my wagon, but the wagon was getting 50 degree vent temps (after 2 cans of 134A this morning )
The wife has less than ZERO interest though, so I don't see this going anywhere.
Too bad, I could really enjoy that car. I looked on a website with MB model info, and saw that it is a one year only car. ie: 190D 2.5 Turbo. Too bad...
BTW, 287K
Oh, another thing I noticed. You don't really have the ability for just a slow smooth acceleration up to speed. It starts off slowly, and then when the turbo spools, which is quickly, you are off! But it was either snail or rocket. Very little middle ground. And that was with it going straight from 1st to 3rd.

I have a 190D turbo that has been converted to a 5 speed from another
190D. I have searched the archives on this model's automatic transmission and there seems to be a number of people who feel that the automatic is the achilles heel. If that is so, or even if it isn't, get a donor car or find a junked 190D with a manual and convert it. This is a sweet running car that is a lot of fun to drive.
