RAVE! Valves adjusted and Injectors Recalibrated

I try to perform as much of my own work as possible. At some point, if you don't have a second car, renting a car becomes expensive if your home repair takes more than an evening.

I don't adjust my own valves, but I perform the rest of the "tune up" myself. For $55, its more productive for me to have someone else do this. So off to my friendly neighborhood MB diesel mechanic, Wolfgang at Diesel Research.

My engine was not running quite as nicely as I felt it should. I wasn't getting that purrring sewing machine noise. It took a good 10 minutes of slow city driving before I felt the engine was adequately "warmed up". Sure the temp gauge said it was warmed up, but it just didn't respond that well. As some of you know this can be all feel and overly sensitive complaining but we just love our little noise makers don't we! It was smoking a bit too much going up the hill.

On Wednesday I dropped off my car at 8am. I had Wolfgang pull my injectors and recalibrate and balance them. He increases the injector pressure to 2200 psi from the standard turbo setting of 2000 psi as standard procedure. They atomize a bit better at the higher pressures. One injector was opening at 1800 and one had a bad pattern. Reinstalled them, replaced the braided fuel line, adjusted the valves and I picked the car back up at 2pm. At 175K the the chain stretch is still only 1 degree.

$222.22 later the engine runs much much better. I now have that smoother sewing machine noise and I'm hoping for a 10% increase in fuel economy.

Happy Day! Money well spent!

For $222.22 and to get those results I would agree it was worth it...
