wood gauge pod for W123

I installed my boost gauge in its new home today...in the wood ash tray on my 300D! It took a lot of work with the rotary tool, but it fits and doesn't compromise the quality look of the zebrano wood Check out the pics. I don't have my EGT gauge yet, but it will go on the right.

I first had to take the ash tray to a machine shop so that I could use a Bridgeport mill. A drill press would probably work too. I put the ash tray in the vise (still assembled) and VERY slowly drilled two holes through the wood and plastic face with a 2" hole saw. No splintering or cracks in the wood! I used a rotary tool at home for the rest. I took apart the ash tray and cut out numerous parts so that my gauge and attachments would fit. I then removed the sheet metal ash tray frame (held down by two large phillips screws) and cut it to fit the gauge wiring/tubing. Finally, I milled out part of the plastic backing inside the dash board for the tubing (being careful to avoid the wire running right behind it). I left the power wire for the cigarette igniter detached when I installed everything.

The next step is wiring the backlight...

Not a bad idea to use the factory wood piece to match the factory wood. I've seen people try to match pine and oak for some reason and make it look decent. Great job.

I don't smoke either but I'd rather use that space for more audio control accessories.
