Seems the young lady's brakes went out (her boyfriend had repaired her brakes for her

). She used the old oil pan against the curb emergency brake

. The oil pump is destroyed and you can see where the crank balance lobe took a chunk out of the oil pump support. She wants to fix it. More to come.

Wow at least she is ok and that is the only thing that seems damaged. What about the wheel that meet the curb?

Time for a donor block?

The tires did not hit the curb. She straddled it. In addition to the oil pan the steering link is bent somewhat. I am going into this thinking that this engine can be repaired without alot of expense (I've got a spare upper/lower oil pan).

It's hard to tell what I'm looking at in the photos. There are some recognizeable landmarks that I could see. Lots of oil. Ouch!
The upper pan will be a PITA to change.
A 124 with a 603 would have been toast in the same situation.

What I want to know is how she lost both braking systems........front and rear........simulataneously??

lietuviai you are looking at a crushed lower and busted upper oil pan on a euro 300D.

I don't know Brian - I have not gotten into the brakes yet (other than the oil pan

). The rear brake reservoir is dry.

I got the engine/tranny out in about 4 hours this afternoon. Will start pulling it down this week.

Another pic showing the busted upper oil pan. The engine is on a stand at this point. There was an issue with the rod bearing/crank lube and the crank is going to need to be polished.

While we're on this topic, is there an option to have skidpads on the bottom/chin of our cars to protect the pans??

That might decrease cooling via the air conduction but at least it's not going to get hit? Or how about a perforated one?

I'm sure it is doable but have personally never seen any such thing. Pretty straight forward to build one I suppose.

I am the proud owner of an oil pan protection plate for a 123. I have not gotten around to installing it yet. Somewhere there is an ancient thread with the part number.

...I always personally drive my friends car's that I do brake work on before I give it to them. Also I always give the pedal a extremely firm press to check that no hoses are going to blow on the road (if they are not brand new)....

I think I see tire cord on that passenger-side front tire. Looks like tread separation. Maybe she smacked the curb with the oil pan and bounced off the tire?

Yes, I also tend to test brake work rather firmly in the driveway several times first before a road test. And the first road test(s) include plenty of space to use the emergency brakes if necessary.

MB girls should date only competant Mercedes DIYers. But I guess that would require a system of polygamy.
