240D cold start problems

my 79 240D has a factory rebuilt eng with 85K. has been great and always started, till now........ replaced glow plugs and fuse, fuel filters. will start and run fine with a shot of ether and when warmed up, but not when cold. is there a GP relay on this car or just the fuse on the fire wall? could it be the injection pump? woould not think so since it runs fine after ether spray. I appreciate any replies!!!!!!! Thanks!

do not... and i repeat do not use ether at all! its for your own safety and the life of the engine

if you suspect the glow plugs check the strip fuse for it under the driver side dash .. its on the firewall.. .

but for the love of god please dont use ether

*Ether*... use and abuse... **flame suit on**
"Ether", use and abuse. *Flame suit on*

Your relay is under the panel, driver side, above your knees. It does sound like your GPs arnt getting power which you need to check with a volt-ohm meter. Just turn the key to "glow" and see if you have 12 volts to your GPs. Let us know. OR.. does the dome light dim when you glow the GPs? it should.

twisted metal

Aye, unless you enjoy the sights and sounds of twisted pistons and bearings, use ether, ohterwise dont. I brought my car to a shop once to get it inspected and another thing or 2, left it overnight. The mechanic killed my starter motor trying to get it going, then not knowing what to do since it wasnt starting, tried spraying ether into it to get it going, still didnt work. When he told me all this (save the part of HIM actually killing my starter motor) i was speachless at the sheer ignorance of the man, and never brought my car back

Being a boat driver and used to Cats and Jimmys I never think twice about using starting fluid, but NOT on the "indirect injection" MBs, use a little WD 40 if you must squert something in there.
