Need a couple parts for my engine swap.. 300D NA

Thanks for reading.
I'm looking for an air cleaner assembly off a normally aspirated 300D. The one from the 240 motor doesn't fit the 300D motor I'm installing. Sadly, I'm not sure what all I need to aquire, as I've not looked at a NA 300D's intake in a long time. Anyone have pics? Extra housing laying around? I'm also unclear on where the blowby gasses go on 300D's. Looks like the oil dribble must come outta the air cleaner housing at the bottom... do I remember something about a separator that's inside the air cleaner housing? I'm gonna go to the pick and pull today, but I thought I'd ask here, too. Thanks a ton!

i dont know

what is different but i think the 300 na uses the same filter as a 240 which leads me to think there might be a way to adapt.

but other than that what happened to the 300 air cleaner housing?

Hey Tom. I think you may be right. The sizes are the same, the intake manifold from the 240 has a tall shoulder (with a butterfly valve inside) that meets the bottom hole of the circular housing. The 300's intake has the right size shoulder, but it's not tall enough. Also, I think there may be a bracket involved. The engine only came with the intake manifold, no air cleaner, oil separator or other. I may try to adapt the oil separator from the 240, I'll just need to find a way to input the spun gases to the 300's intake manifold. The 240 has a nipple on it for this. I see air cleaner bracket's for sale on ebay, but I'm not convinced that they're applicable to my intake manifold. No good pics that I can find.

I did talk to a local parts hoarder and they seem to think that there's an adaptor that'll do the trick, and think that they have one on hand. I'll find out tomarrow.

I have two 300D Normally Aspirated cars.
The 1980 takes in top of valve cover gas through a manifold inlet.
No oil separator in the air cleaner, no drain back to the crankcase.

The 1981 car has no inlet on manifold and has the top of valve cover connected
to the top of air cleaner - connected to an oil separator,
that drains back into the oil pan through a tube.

If you do not have the drain tube going into the pan, no point in
having the air cleaner separator.

Both cars have the lower air cleaner bolted to the intake manifold.

how's the lower housing bolted to the intake? my housing has three holes for studs to come through, while my intake manifold doesn't have studs... is there a bracket that adapts here? also, the mouth of the intake is too short to reach the opening of the housing. the size is right, though. is there some kind of adaptor between the housing and the manifold? got digital photography? could you send me pics of the 81's setup? (my engine has the drip pipe). thanks for your help!

Here is a link to a thread I had when I needed an aircleaner for my NA 80 wagon (God rest it's soul). My wagon had the drip tube, and the air cleaner pictured (aluminum) had a nipple with oring on bottom for the drip tube.
The middle piece broke, which fit down onto the manifold, along with a rubber seal thing. I never found a matching aluminum air cleaner, I just put an air cleaner on it from my 77 parts car. It did NOT have the nipple for the drip tube, but it never seemed to cause a problem.
I still have that busted aluminum air cleaner out in the trunk of the parts car. I'm not real good at throwing stuff away.......

Aluminum air cleaner needed....

funny. I have an 80 300CD and an 81 300D . I am going to use the 80 as the donor car.

I think there must be a bracket . I will look when i get a chance this weekend me. Op, feel free to pm me and remind me if no one replies with answer and i will for sure take a look and a pic for you. which reminds me ...

There's this... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mercedes-Air-Intake-Bracket-Diesel-300SD-300D-300CD_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ43946QQitemZ8038431538QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

I guess I need that, and probably the 'middle piece' that Jimmy L was talking about... anyone know where to source the middle bit? My housing doesn't have a nipple, I think I can move the 240's drain tube (with it's bends) and separator over to the 300... couple well placed zip ties.
