Leaking turbo?
 

I believe the KKK on the SDL is leaking, there is no shaft play (side to side or front to back) but after the vehicles idles for about 5min or so and I go step on the pedal... a plume of white colored smoke blows out the backside.

Obviously it's not loading up with fuel. Oil consumption is minimal too.

Does this sound like what the deal is with the car?

If you have minimal oil consumption, I would tend to think it was fuel and the smoke might be caused by the low combustion temps from idling for 5 minutes. Does it tend to clear up right away?

Yup, clears right up. Maybe my ALDA is still too high. :confused:

How much oil is there in the intake crossover pipe? Is there oil in the turbine feed pipe? Is there oil in the flange ahead of the compressor?

To dismiss blowby, vent the valve cover breather to atmosphere and cap the turbo intake pipe. Does the same smoking occur?

Little in the crossover tube. Just like a flim in the tube from the turbocharger to the x-over tube. There is some just before the turbocharger, but I associate that with some blowby.

I'll cap that plug tomorrow and give it a spin.

The white smoke can't be oil if the oil quantity is remaining constant.

If you see visible white smoke from oil, you're probably burning at least a quart every 500 miles.

Sometimes you're burning a quart in 50 miles.:eek:

A couple of weeks ago there was a post referring to smoke issues.

According to the website cited, white smoke can be caused by air entering your fuel line. Maybe you have a leak somewhere and suck the air bubble through when you juice it hard. Then, it slowly accumulates another air bubble in the line until you clear it again. Just a theory.

Do you see a bubble in the clear inline filter, or notice a little white smoke constantly?

If it is white, any possibility it is coolant? Burnt oil should be blue, unburnt fuel black...

.........you would think so.......but the 603 states otherwise.......white as a ghost......;)

Well, I suppose on the intake side, that could be true on a diesel vs. gasser. Turbo exhaust side leak should be blue though, with distinctive odor. :D

No coolant loss with the SDL, also did the oil cap blowby test... cap just sat there. I also vented the breather to the atmosphere and there was hardly any vapor emitted.

Since I turned that ALDA down the smoke show after an idle period is far less. So far I am 2.5 turns from the max CCW. I'll do another 1.5 here once it cools down.

Do you have an idea of the total number of turns in the ALDA and where the factory position might be in that total number?
