Sounds like this thing is quite common. Sucks because it is a very dangerous occurrence. If it happened on the highway at 3,000 rpm all that oil would have been dumped in a second and the engine would have been toast!!!

Wink Could be worse...

You could have been out on a date with the new girl and the car not start,
leaving you two cold and alone by yourselves for hours...

... and if it was at night, we'd have to keep each other warm while the tow truck driver found his way right?

The details of the whole thing were disclosed to me today. It turns out that after my car was repaired from my encounter with a deer, my body shop reassembled the oil cooler line in a different manner that wasn't the way it should have been done and thus resulted in this incident. Apparently the belt had been rubbing the line for a long time but resulted in no leaks. And then on that day, it must have rubbed with greater force and snapped the line right after I parked the car. The mechanic reassured me that my motor mounts were in great shape and said he'd would have recommended a replacement to me if they were in bad shape.

You're getting a good deal on the replacement. I have to take my wagon tomorrow to my mechanic. He is going to replace both my oil cooler lines. I'm having to get one of my kids to follow me and bring me back home, as the wife will no longer have anything to do with these cars.
I'll keep my comments to myself on that one.......

Thumbs up

I just purchased my oil cooler lines, I have to pick up two more motor mounts for the SD. I figure I'll kill two birds with one stone on that one.

Good plan!
I was amazed at the difference motor mounts make.

The ones on my SDL were CRUSHED flat. The trans mount was awful too, it's so nice. I'm expecting similar with the SD despite the mounts are in so-so shape.

Hell I even found a set of heat shields for both motors!!

My driver's side engine mount on my '82 300SD collapsed a few years ago, so badly that it pounded a hole in the crossmember. The power steering belt sawed into the oil cooler line and made a thin slit that caused a fine spray of oil that went absolutely everywhere. I had engine oil all over my rear wheel rims! So far, no permanent engine damage seems to have resulted. Quite a mess, though.

Oil Line

I had a feeling it was an oil line when I read your first post. Of course I had to read through all the other posts to get to the bottom and then I found you already had the answer.

Good luck,

Wayne

Well that's what the mechanic told me. When I told him that I usually keep my eye on the oil pressure gauge, he replied by telling me that most of the time when people notice the oil pressure dropping, it is usually too late when they turn off the engine anyway, especially if it happens at highway speeds.

That's what the gauge is for. If you notice the oil pressure dropping and you pull the vehicle off the road immediately, no damage is done.

My SDL started dropping pressure at highway speeds due to oil consumption. I noticed it immediately after it fell off the peg at 3.0. I had it over on the side of the road and it never dropped below 2.0 until it came down to idle.

No damage was done to the engine AFAIK.

The mechanic is probably referring to the fact that most of the time when people notice the oil pressure gauge..........it's already on 0....
